I was just accepted for the test server this weekend. It will be my first time. How does it work exactly - do I get to pick anything I want for my hangar?

YMMV... You'll start off with 50K Au. Bots and Guns that normally cost Ag will cost nothing. Bots and Guns that cost WSP will cost Au instead. Things that need Au to buy are significantly reduced, including extra slots. There is no experience and everything is already unlocked. All bots and weapons are already maxed, no need to upgrade.
My typical startup path is: Rename > Buy 5 slots > buy 1 each of whatever new bots are being tested and arm them > Buy meta bots and their loadouts > Kick 「bum-bum」 until I get a clan invite > Kick a lot more 「bum-bum」.
The test server is also a great opportunity to test out experimental setups, and to see if your current ideas for loadouts will hold water when you get to gold and above tiers back in the real game. Since all equipment is auto-maxed, EVERYTHING is about skill and proper squad tactics, so good chances to learn new skill sets.

Thanks for the info. For those who have tested these new bots before, since everything is maxed, aren't the new light and medium completely outclassed going against maxed-out heavies?

Yes, that is the problem with the test server. You'll find current bots are probably going to wipe the floor with the switch bots, especially the light one. Just keep it in mind as you buy stuff....after you play around with the new bots, you'll go to running experimental line ups with current bots to test things out. Some have liked the medium switch bot....I found the switch too slow but maybe it's been changed. All in all, it is a lot of fun.
