So right now, we have nine different Chapters within the Aurora Nova family of clans. That's a pretty good number, and because some clans are marked for different purposes than others- for instance, progression, or time zones- we get folks moving in between them fairly steadily- which we're always happy to accommodate. My rule of thumb whenever someone's put in for a transfer has been to ask them to simply wish everyone a fond farewell in clan chat before going, and we'd get them squared away.
Besides the obvious courtesies, there's a more pragmatic reason for this as well. People leave clans for all sorts of reasons. This may come as a shock, but a few people even leave Aurora Nova every now and again. But leaving always generates speculation, and in my experience it's almost always worse than the actual reason itself. There lies one of life's little ironies- sometimes by looking to avoid drama, we risk creating more.
To the dismay of some and the delight of many, I have made a decision that I am going to be stepping down as your Moderator here very shortly. I've given the team a head's up, and this is hardly "quitting in a huff." I'd like to give them time to fill the vacancy, then I'm turning in the badge.
If you're part of the TLDR crowd, feel free to stop reading here (assuming you've made it this far). The rest is the rationale for those who wish to know, but I can tell you it's not as exciting or salacious as "MOD STEPS DOWN UNDER MYSTERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES" The bottom line of it is that 95% of this Forum are the folks who constitute a truly incredible community. Some of the old faces have drifted away, some new faces appear, and all make this place the top exchange on the internet for War Robots information, culture, and fun. (Seriously, if you're ever feeling down about the state of the Forum, go spend 48 hours on Facebook, trust me).
But man, those 5% or so...
The beginning of the end came when one forumite happened to catch me a few weeks ago at 4am. As parents do, I was up with my crying 2-year-old daughter, cradling and rocking in one arm and distracting myself on the phone with the other. ("Doing the rounds," it's part of this job, I do it first thing in the morning, throughout the day, and before bed, seeing who's PM'd me for help with something, reported posts, etc). I was on- at best- three hours of sleep, so I definitely wasn't my best self, but this forumite had a problem with how I moderated a thread, sent me a PM on the board threatening to take it up with Strayed and Weed, and even tagged me on Discord. Upon learning that I actually had nothing to do with it, our imperious Little Lord Fauntleroy then told me to go find him a solution. "You're a mod. That's what they do. Help with the community."
This was clearly one of those record-screeching, "Yup, that's me, I bet you're wondering how I got here" moments- and a real eye-opener about how much I'm willing to put up with for a hobby. There are two misconceptions that have persisted and over time, eroded the enjoyment I've gotten out of this position. Misconception #1. We are customer service. Like 「fluffernutter」 we are. We're everyday posters, just like everyone here, who care enough about something to dedicate loads of effort to making sure the trains run on time. Volunteers. And whether it's being ordered to solve a problem at 4am or some other entitled nitwit ordering "Yeah, get that [image I find objectionable but can't stop looking at] the ?firetruck? off of there," they're equal measures risible and tiring. Same with the armchair anarchists, who suspect everything is some grandiose power play that it's their job to spit in the eye of. "Non serviam!" they cry, trembling with righteous indignation. The dregs and scourings of filthy slumdom, unwashed yahoos, jailbirds, night hawks, won't-works, 'burroo barnacles', and pavement pirates, all, or nearly all, in the scarecrow stage of verminous trampdom.* Who wants to put up with that crap? Jeez o'Pete! Misconception #2. I'm a moderator who posts on the side. Now this one, mileage may vary. But I've been very clear that I'm a guy who posts here because I like it here, and on the side I pitch in to moderate. And yet, periodically I get someone who feels the need to tell me how I'm supposed to be acting "as a moderator." And this really, really matters to them. I've consistently been a poster who moderates on the side- and now I'll quite happily be a blogger who posts on the side. Remember, this is 5% stuff, not the 95% stuff of people who- while we may not often (if ever) see eye to eye on, still quite happily make a positive contribution and impact on this place. Hats off to you guys. You made it worth doing, and it was my privilege to serve. I accepted the job to give something back to the community that had given me so much when I was new to the game, and I'd like to think I have. But just like the policeman whose job keeps them in constant, steady contact with the dregs of society, so too does this position require us to ingest a regular and unceasing diet of individuals whose conduct and contribution skew towards the dubious. Regular posters? They can click through if they see a thread go off the rails. They can pick and choose what they read as their interests and desires take them. They don't have to deal with the folks here who grass one another up with the Report Post feature over and over again, hoping something will stick so they can "win." The mods and admins, on the other hand.... So make sure you tip your server, ladies and gentlemen. And by tip, I mean make a quick post supporting the right call when it's controversial. It really does help chisel off some of the burnout when we have the support of folks we're volunteering to help. There's a lot of crust in our existing volunteer pool, and these guys get huge marks for continuing to do it even after much of the joy has fled. As for me? I know where this is heading. When I found myself not wanting to play a game of War Robots not because of anything to do with the game itself, but because I needed a break from the nonsense surrounding it, that was the mind made up. I'm getting out while I still enjoy everything. I have a tremendously fulfilling clan I'm a part of, a blog I love to do- and I've even been recruited to be part of the community admin team for the forthcoming Battle Titans. Who's got time for the negativity? * can't take credit for this glorious last sentence. It's taken from the Glasgow Observer in 1921 to describe Rangers fans.

Well I'm both happy and sad for you I guess. Being a moderator is not a fun job especially on this forum considering all the flack you got. Now US presidents at end of their term would usually give out pardons...sooo... how about stripping that warning?

Sad to hear this, i'm in this community since not many months, but grew fond of your humour. I've been a mod in the past, and it's not easy at all, especially when it becomes being a babysitter for strangers Take your time, and most of all,as i said already in the past, thanks for everything you have done for this community, which is actually one of the best moderated, self-moderated, and less-flamable i've met around.

Thank you for your service Mr Dredd... you have more than shown yourself worthy of the position, IMO, and it is a shame that the few have screwed up the absolute good you provided for the many... much like everything else that I like in life, I guess. The squeaky wheels vs the silent majority, sorta... Anyway, I understand your reasons and support ya, fwiw. You have a lot on your plate, so anything that adds stress should be shed like dead skin, imo. As far as your job here, I can't think of one decision that I saw that was heavy handed or not correct. There will always be people who think outside of the norm, for better or for worse, and it is a shame when they are in the wrong but think that just because they are different, that they are revolutionary or correct. And as to the rule lawyers and word twisters that always tried to twist what happened into some evidence that you were the personification of your avatar... yeah, 「fluffernutter」 them. If I could and was asked, I would step up to help in your vacancy, but I'm pretty sure my heavy approach would make folks whine like baby birds waiting on mama's regurgitated worms. But, alas, Real Life won't let me focus any more than I already do on this game and forum. Ya know, it seems to me that folks who complained have probably not been a forum that has mods that really actually police their forums... b/c if they had, they would realize just what they had in you as not only a fair moderator, but an active one, as well. I know you are not the only one, so I will say this about all the mods here... they are some of the fairest bunch around. In most forums, not only do you have to not screw up and if you do you had better NOT argue, but you had better not say anything that goes against the "party line" that the forum is standing by. Dissent is not always allowed since admins can decide who gets to be a member on any basis that they so choose. So, cheers to all of y'all for making this a place that one can speak their mind as much as possible while still doing y'all's best to provide a place of info and discussion for more than just the game... Cheers. And again, Dredd77, thank you.

Yup. Thanks for moddin goodly, Dredd. lol. I always laugh at those who get all butt hurt about the way folks moderate a forum. Long and short, even a "free" forum is someone's property. They claimed that digital space. Have modded some forums in the past, I loved explaining that concept to those snowflakey sunshines who get all butt hurt about something someone said, or they saw, or some such 「dookie」. You were a *far* more fair moderator than I would have been. I'm either heavy handed with this "shut the 「fluffernutter」 up mook" style, or a "hey, it's a free country, people get to do and say what they want, I'm not going to infringe on that" ...lol. But rarely anything in between. I always admire those who can be moderators and do it well. Can we unban Dirtylikarat? I kinda like that guy's humor.

Just wanted to thank you for the service you've put in here. In 20+ years of online gaming, this is the best forum I've run across in terms of how people treat each other in general. You and the other mods have clearly done some outstanding work with an outstanding community.

Sorry to see those that are assshats drive you out.. I have a future first born somewhere you are welcome to have as a thank you for your service.. I have only been on this forum for a month or so..
BUT I have run VB' boards before.. Heck, back in the late 80's through 90's I ran multi-node BBS's.. So i feel your pain.. Its a thankless job that pays you nothing in return..
Back a few years ago, I was a Division Manager for the Transportation Dept of a company.. It was constant meetings and lots of thankless hours. Now I took a HUGE pay-cut to be a Supervisor working midnight's, just so I have a real life..
The stress of any management position, whether it be in this virtual world or the real world, is rarely worth it..
Brother, get back to enjoying the game and not dealing with the bs..
Cheers..

We told Dredd he was too hardcore and had to pace himself. If I had used his pace, I would have been long gone as well.
For now he remains a mod as we don't have any replacements. So I guess we just won't find one and force him to keep modding! Muahahaha!!!

I sorta assumed you would put 12 gareth pilots on an island, make them battle for rewards, food, and luxury items, and then hold tribal counsel meetings, until one pilot emerged...
