I have always gone random for the early stages.... 2 to 4. But when the ones I want dwindle to 1 or 2... I pay the 1k. Since u cannot choose game mode on Amazon the beacon skills are not preferable to me. And I never want the module ones so it really limits the favorable choices. Good hunting

I usually end up hitting the skill I want for under 1,000 gold so I usually roll with the punches. I have had it once or twice where it goes pretty much to that point though.

A logical answer is to compute the expected gold payout to get the skill that you want and compare that to the 1k fixed cost. If the expected cost is cheaper than 1k then ON AVERAGE you are better off just roll and pray.
A few things: to compute the expected gold cost (we call it expectation) you need to know the entire distribution of odds of each pilot skills, which is not disclosed by Pix...
Second, I mention ON AVERAGE you are better off if the expected cost is lower than 1k. But in reality there is uncertainty in the roll outcome that you will have to consider as well. The uncertainty can be quantified by different means, one popular choice is the good-old-fashion Standard Deviation (or SD in short). If you don’t like big uncertainty, which means large SD, then you might be better off just pay the 1k to get the skill that you want FOR SURE.
I just pay the 1k normally for must have skills.
Hope this help you think about probabilities and uncertainty.

If you want to be smart about it the OP's statement is the way to go. However if you want to be safe then spend that 1k gold. Personally I Keep rollin' rollin' rollin' rollin'.

We could do with collecting some data. I *think* that I do better with rolling for skills on non meta bots, random rolls on my Phantom have been terrible.

I've only done the thousand to get Ghost with out playing the random 「fluffernutter」 around. I wanted it. I got it. I love it.

I usually end up hitting the skill I want for under 1,000 gold so I usually roll with the punches. I have had it once or twice where it goes pretty much to that point though. which, as I have said, the extra you paid (over 1000) is more than countered by what you save meaning you spend less than you would from simply spending the 1k for every skill.
