Howdy.
I like the Natasha’s default build and load out (probably because it’s basically MW:O LRM and PPC spam, simplified for a dolt like me), but I feel like I could be doing a lot more damage, even with Thermonuclear Reactor.
My primary goal is softening up enemy mechs dashing towards the beacons and helping allies root out campers. (Or doing the camping, myself.)
I’m still figuring out the premium weapon specs and the like. I’d prefer not to spend cash on something I can’t even preview (I say as I impulse-bought Invader and Inquisitor on sale), so Workshop is A-OK with me.
Sorry if it’s an obvious question.

The cheapest good weapon is a trident - but don't buy with gold before your fifth slot. Tridents are cheap at 1000au and really quick and easy to level up.
LRM is really not good in War Robots. Replace with pins if you do get tridents.
Meanwhile because all of that is gold - just replace the whole lot with an RDB griffin - that is a griffin with pins (not pinata) and tullumbas which are both 500m splash rockets. They will do a superb job of softening up mechs dashing towards beacons and rooting out campers - they have splash so can shoot people hanging around the edges of corners (as can tridents).

Natty is a tough Bot to equip early, as the only decent Ag Heavy weapon is the Thunder. With patience and lots of Ag, you can get Tempests or Avengers with the Workshop, but yeah, Griffin with Tulumbas/Pins, Punishers, or Molots would be a much better cheap mid-ranger.

Hmm, looks like I’ve been doing it wrong. I’d usually go to the nearest beacon, cap, then start doing scratch damage against everyone until a mech with higher ROF takes me out (if I don’t spawn as Kumiho and cap and ambush as much as possible, or just survive). I’ll get kills from finishing off people or laying into anyone in the open with the cannons. (I also already have a fifth slot) Should I disregard long-range entirely? What’s the robot/weapon to get if I do have gold? (I swear I’m not a whale, I only buy crap if it’s on sale and don’t bother with rushing jobs).

Nothing wrong with keeping 1-2 Long Range Bots in your hangar if you can use them well. Problem is that Nashorn, Kang Dae, Zenit, and Noricum are badly underpowered weapons, so until you can afford Au or Workshop items, any long-range build you make is likely to be weak.
By contrast, there are a variety of very effective close- and mid-range weapons that you can buy for Ag, such as: Thunder Pinata Pin Tulumbas Punisher/Punisher T Molot/Molot T.

I run a Treb Butch and will soon replace it with a Flux Fury. I know the pleasure of hitting a dangerous foe from across the field to weaken it so it's less of a threat to your short range teammates. However my long range plans may see me replace my long range bot with a short or mid ranger. The game greatly rewards higher damage totally and a long range build is never going to produce a lot of damage.

That, and not feeding the enemy team with kills, since my brawling method is a 50/50 on chain-killing, or getting cut down by five mechs at once. :V I prefer brawling, so if I'm not really adding damage for my team to chew through, I'll mix up with mid and close range.

Tempests are good out to 800m, Trebs have their uses (best on Butch or Fury), but the best Long-Range builds right now are Flux Fury or Flux/Gekko Natasha. Fluxes are expensive to get, and even more expensive to upgrade.

Personally it isn't part of my playing style to start with a mid or long range build. They are what I use mid game 'if' we have a beacon advantage or if I'm running out of bots too quickly. Mid range straddle the point between brawling and support where long range builds are only useful for the one job and are not very useful on some maps. Tridents are currently really good and really cheap both to buy and to upgrade. Avengers are also but I wouldn't really call them a mid-range build. If you get two tridents - look at eventually replacing the natasha with a fury and getting a third. Good long range is essentially limited to flux (high range constant fire laser - used by champions) or Trebuchets (single shot, 23 second reload - boring as- not used by champions). Flux are expensive to get and upgrade and take a fury to run effectively.

Kang Dae and Molots work well as silver weapons to do what you described. The Kang Dae does enough damage in a hit to take big chunks out of beacon runners and reloads quickly enough to chew away at other heavy bots up to 800m away that are caught outside of cover.
Another silver option would be an RDB Griffin as a 1sr drop. The 500m range, large splash radius and jump of the Griffin means you can spawn in, jump and then find yourself in range to hit some beacon runners.

This is my Natasha build. I call her my Russian Grandmother "My babushka". She a destroyer of many bots. She may be slow but she deals good damage and many kills especially at 600m. I am in the Diamond I league and she doesn't leave my hangar. Gekko/Tempest works well for me. She gets the job done.

Avengers Avengers Avengers.
They will be the most viable and versatile for you as you progress through bots and leagues. You're probably going to evolve that Natty play style into a Bulwark eventually. Rambo Carnage is a really fun build, too.
with dualie Avengers on the Natty you're shredding shields the moment they break 500m and the shot pattern only gets tighter as they close in. Avenger clips are loooooonnggg, but pair with a Shredder to park them out beyond 350m where Taran and Orks can't get you. Punisher / Shredder on other side unless you have a leveled light shotgun to add some CQC. Something really satisfying about a 4-weapon chain gun build, though.

Avengers are the way forward together with Punishers to give a max lead hose, shield destroying build that will always do the business at mid/short range and that any original Mechwarrior can be proud of. Forwards compatibility with Bulwark, Inquisitor and Mercury brawlers etc is a given with this superb all round heavy weapon. Lead hose beats energy all day long!
