I got 8k Invader components from chests, so I thought I might as well get it (for my smurf account). But after playing it for a while - mind you, it's only level 5 - it appears to be a useless piece of 「dookie」. Is there a way to play it efficiently? It's not good enough to compete with stealth bots, it can't get close enough to make Incursion effective, and it doesn't have enough firepower to be really scary. It's certainly something different and I like to change up things, but is there a good reason to spend upgrade time on it?

Maybe you're not playing it right in general or right for the league you're in. A Champ used a Schutze with an Ember. So any bot can be viable in the right hands.

Pretty good vid on how to use the Invader:
I'm working on an Invader in the ws to replace my pursuer when anti stealth modules hit the live server...

Search up Kitty War Robots, He uses invader with storm gust halo very well. Full shotgun, energy shotgun and mixes work well

I was literally about to post this myself. On paper its ludicrously overpowered, it had higher hp at level 1 than all my other bots at level 9.
However, its hitbox is the size of spain and its firepower is about as effective as a chorizo sausage. I will perservere up to level 9 for the sake of variety and entertainment but I am a little disappointed in my latest acquisition.
And to that ballista spectre that shot me out of the sky yesterday - I both hate and admire you in equal measure.

I use mine as a support bot mostly. I had better experience with it before the Halo root fix, but since then, have moved my energy shotguns to my Mender for a pure root build. My Invader is currently running Gusts (L9) and Storm (L8), and the bot is L9. I don't use the Incursion ability until I see an opportunity. For example, a lone red, or a bunch of reds that cannot hurt me (Moon when they're under me at the CB). The Moon is particularly hilarious as I can suppress a bunch of reds and I can imagine their surprise in the brawl when suddenly they're not doing as much damage as before.
My eventual plan is to get more Halos and another Corona for this. Because of it's slow speed, I do best with either the taser build or one or more root guns so that I can either follow fast bots with auto lock or root them and then pound away. The jump takes a lot of getting used to. It's unlike the other jumps, and is similar to the Hover Airlines jump, except that you have the long legs that can get caught on things.
Some things to think about. The low profile means that you can hide behind low cover effectively and have good protection from homing missiles. But leave that cover and a blind ant with a peashooter can hit you. It shares the turret turning advantage of the other spider bots, but for some reason, it chokes on even the smallest uphill inclines. The Incursion works similarly to the Helldive in that you can hit the button again after 1 second to splash down. The Incursion is also good for taking that first beacon on some maps like Valley and Dreadnought. you can literally jump there faster than a Strider (or about the same).
As for builds...
Taser - I really like this build, but then I have a penchant for autolock due to my spray and pray style of shooting. This build fits me quite well thanks to its range and close up melting power. Of course, it's weak to stealth though, so I don't use it anymore.
Shotgun - Very good support bot up to 500m with good close range punch.
Energy shotgun - This would be my prefered build and I tend to swap my shotguns back and forth with my Mender. After I get finish off my 4th Spark, I'll be going back to building Halos and another Corona in the WS.
I haven't really tried any other builds, but with the Invader, you really want to retain the element of surprise as much as possible. Failing that, your next objective is to draw as much attention to yourself for as long as possible. I've seen blues steal beacons because the reds were suddenly focused on me. I think its that human instinct to stomp on bugs!

I run these and they are very effective when used right. For me I go with an aggressive mindset. If I'm in an invader for more than a couple of minutes I'm either having a great match or I'm using it wrong. It is a very effective beacon grabber. For Beacon rush matches it's usually I'll start with an invader. I'll either get to the Beacon first view of the Jump or I'm in a one on one match with some kind of hell burner or strider and their weapons will be suppressed and I'll have a big HP advantage. Most times even enough to withstand and overload and destruction of the hell burner and still have half my health left. Mind you my robot is only at level 10 so it's not like I'm running this maxed out and I play a lot of champion league opponents.
If I'm low on hit points I may find a cluster of robots and do a suicide jump to get them suppressed to where my teammates can take shots at them. Another thing I look for is when opponents are in the tunnels on carrier map I'll jump on top of them suppress them and let my team do the rest of the work. Same goes if I am in the tunnels and they are above me.
In my brawling hanger I run coronas and halos. They are much better options than their non lockdown counterparts as they are practically the same up close plus you get a shot at lockdown. For my mid range hangar I run one with scourge and 2 Sparks.
The only thing to be mindful of is jumping out in the open because you may suppress your immediate opponent but there could be somebody sitting 200 m outside there who can just fire away at full damage at you. But again to me you should not be playing this bot with intentions of keeping it around for half the match.
