So, before the option to select a region was implemented i assume everyone was international by default, when it got in the game i switched it from international to the US region, thinking that it's just mweh, whatever, people will know where this pilot is and junk.
I just want to know if it effects matchmaking or is it cosmetic? Does it try to match you with players in the selected region or is it just the equivalent to wearing a t-shirt with a flag printed on it?

I read somewhere that the game tries to match you with players from the same region which is why I left my profile as international.
I enjoy playing with and against pilots from around the world. Many Asian players are not afraid to run unconventional builds while some Mexican and South American pilots are among the most skilled players I encounter.

Pretty sure IP address is the only factor.

I think the flag thing is cosmetic only. It may also help clan leaders select potential members from a particular country/region/timezone - iirc Pix even said something to this effect at at some stage. When I 1st started playing 2 years ago it was definitely regional (I'm in Australia) and I would get anyone from within the Asia area (e.g. China/Taiwan/Japan/Vietnam/Thailand/South Korea & India). I would not see Nth/Sth American or European players except in exceptional circumstances (e.g. really quiet times).
It would appear the MM player selection is now much broader and diverse (not particularly regional) and I see players from anywhere although a greater proportion for me is still from the Asia area however this is also time dependant. The regional emphasis change may be as a result of a diminished player pool but I couldn't be entirely certain.

The flag in the profile is for recommendations on clans and in theory it would allow comparing clans by region. However, since most clans leave the region international I think it is a bit irrelevant. So I think picking your own flag is more about personal identity than anything else in practice. here is a diagram of how the war robots architecture works with matchmaking in regions. If interested it is in this Blog post (google translate if Russian is not for you): habr.com/company/pixonic/blog/346374/ and it has the history of the infrastructure architecture over the generations (up to current 4.X).

I set my flag to Canadian but I still being matched to Asian players. So I think the region selection is purely cosmetic.
