Ok...the founder of our clan is taking a well deserved break from being our spiritual leader and general taskmaster....
And since I'm a smartass, and happened to be on the game when he made the decision to step away... I'm now the GRAND POOBAH....
Aside from playing a lot and telling awful jokes (which I do often and with no response from the rest of the clan), I have no real qualifications to lead a clan.
Can anyone here tell me: 1) what am I supposed to be doing?
2) how can I tell who is playing and how often?
3) what inspires clanmates to squad more often?
4) who invented liquid hand soap and why?
I REALLY want to give back the clan in as good a shape or better as when I was drafted as leader.
(Would changing my screen name to "PSANE PSYD" be helpful?)

Liquid soap was not invented until the nineteenth century; in 1865, William Shepphard patented a liquid version of soap. Per wikipedia...
Why, he dropped a bar of soap once...once

I was a clan leader until I joined my new clan recently. I inherited the clan the same way you did... Just be a good person and do not take things personally and get informed. I truly hated leaving my guys after 2 years with them but I and one other guy were in champion and we couldn't squad with everyone else anymore. In the beginning (pre League) I just ran lower level bots and weapons to play with them.
I asked them if they would like a new leader a number of times trying to see about leaving, they always said no. Finally when I decided to jump ship I left the clan to the player that showed a good even temper and played allot.
Good luck and just remember it is a game!

Dude, I went through pretty much the exact same thing you're going through now. Our previous clan leader decided to step aside because he couldn't play much anymore. And since I was the resident smartass who talked more than most, he thought I was the right guy for the throne. I was pretty new to the clan when he named me the leader, with several older players being there before me. So I just asked the older veterans for advice whenever I had no clue what I was doing. I also made sure to check whether I was doing a good job as a leader. But to answer your question, all I usually do is chat with my clan (which a lot of them love to do), and keep recruiting guys and keep the clan strong by providing advice to others. Our clan has a bunch of guys (5-6 players) who squad regularly, but the vast majority of us are soloists who squad once in a blue moon. We're more of a social clan who chat and give each other advice rather than a squading clan.

Besides grooming the other monkeys?
1. Fix agreed times for squad matches 2. Harder to tell now, but if you play often you'll know who is active 3. For me it is playing matches with like-minded people. The clan I play in now plays very aggressive, good times! 4. Stimpy, to get in good with the ladies

If I do it randomly... I have a 1-32 chance of kicking myself out....

Go all Joker mode and say that one member will be kicked out at the end of the day.
Then sit back and watch the chaos unfold.

I started a clan Special Delivery in the fall of 2017 to play with my RL buddies. They stopped playing, I continued, so together with a couple of active clan mates started to recruit pilots. We made a discord server, we even built a website. By the summer of 2018 we were full capacity with mostly chatty and squady pilots from all over the world, it was fun! But as the time went by, I got tiered of all the drama people bring with them... I found myself doing everything except playing the game... I finally snapped and left it all behind me... Good thing was that I left it all to more capable people, because how I understand it, they're doing good, they have even started up elite division of Special Delivery for master and champion league players, and that makes me feel good. The reason I'm writing all this is because I want to apologize to all my ex clan mates who I have may insulted or let down with my behavior, sorry girls and boys.
Once before, I was an officer in another clan, and I can't shake a feeling that my stupid ideas lead to that clans demise on Android platform... I apologize to you guys also, I was a real jerk sometimes...
Now I'm running a clan again, but the only members are me and my friends alt account. It's a peaceful place for me, I'm finally at peace in War Robots and I won't bother anyone ever again with my stupidity.

JMO.... I think you are being a bit hard on yourself.
First off...as an officer who was a "jerk", you were making suggestions to attempt improvement in the clan...not to be malicious.
Second....we play this game to enjoy ourselves. Elements that diminished that for you caused your departure.

1. -Appoint highly active officers who loves to squad -(optional)Set up a Discord or similar app where you guys can kick back, share jokes. Basically get to know each other more -You and your officers are to dismiss pilots who refuse to squad. Going lone wolf is okay sometimes but not all the time
2. Its difficult to tell ever since Pixonic removed the weekly activity. You and your officers will have to rely on memory on who you see often online and almost always game for a squad.
3. Good matches definitely, imho. Whether win or lose as long the matchmaking by some miracle was kind. However, some of your pilots may be sore losers or may tend to rage quit when beaten badly and just leave squad without any explanation. Always be the better example as the clan leader. Be the first to rage quit! Hahaha! Just kidding. For us accustomed to getting our behinds handed to us, we just laugh it out and move on. It makes losing a lot bearable.

The vast majority of clans have been castrated when Pix removed the reference to activity levels. It is mainly luck who you recruit and advancement is difficult because advancement is strongly influenced by activity. It is difficult to build a clan and make a dash for the top nowadays because your recruits are “average” (in terms of credentials) and you can’t monitor what they do in terms of contribution. I am rather sure this was the intent behind Pix's change. Average everyone out.
Under such conditions there is not much to clan leadership and you should not place too much emphasis that you have a group to lead. Do what feels right and create an environment where people like to hang out and always remember it is just a game and it is a game that’s P2W.

I REALLY want to give back the clan in as good a shape or better as when I was drafted as leader. (Would changing my screen name to "PSANE PSYD" be helpful?) when I started Walking War Robots I wasn’t qualified to start a clan, but i ended up doing so anyway to help promote our PI clan name. I’m onto our fourth brother clan now and I am prolly still not fully qualified, but we do alright. 1. Just talking with your clan members, seeing what their problems, issues are, and help them solve it. That’s what a leader does, leads and takes care of their own. 2. You can’t really. I’ve been waiting till the new season starts, and the people that don’t get any league points within a week or two are promptly dismissed. 3. I was having success in getting more clan activity with bi annual tournaments between our clan members. Got 40 or so members to be active in our last tournament between two clans including someone who is now running our newest brother clan. Problem is that they removed the gold gifts from sharing with clan members so the only way I can pay the winners is with something like western union, and I am not feeling that course right now. Best way to get activity is to just be active yourself. 4. Johnson In 1858. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soap5. Maybe
