So...I’m a relatively casual player - I get in every day, maybe an hour or so across the course of the day. In about a month’s time, I’ve hit Gold II and L29, and my key ‘bots are L6 with most weapons L6 as well.
Based on some of the posts I’ve read here on the forums, it sounds like I want to be careful about how high I go in the leagues lest I find myself easy prey for those who are FAR more engaged than I. My biggest gripe with interactive, multiplayer games like War Robots is when I have to sit and wait, unable to play because of the game design or being well outstripped in skills.
What’s a good place for a casual player with L6 ‘bots to hang out and how do you maintain it? I’m not looking to stay artificially low here (I think you guys call that tanking...?) but I don’t want to get wiped out in the first 2-3 minutes of a match then sit and watch everyone else play for 7-8 minutes just so I can get loot either. Me and the youngling are having fun playing together and I’d like to keep it that way.

Just play if you like it, you'll be positioned where you belong.
If you don't like it, uninstall...
But be sure to announce that you're leaving the game for good in this forum so the goodbye committee can bid you farewell.

Me and the youngling are having fun playing together and I’d like to keep it that way. The ELO will place you according to your bot level and skill level. Which, in all honesty, is complete bollocks. 6 people to a team, so how well you do doesn't really matter. A 6/6 hangar should probably be about where you are, but you'll have tankers running over the top of you or the ELO deciding that you've won too much, so it's time to fight Diamond - Experts. If you stay at 6/6 you shouldn't really move into Diamond as the better hangars will obliterate you (you can always leave match after you mech out, your rewards will come once the match finishes).
Just play how you want to with what you want, just don't go into battle expecting to win.

Hmm, tough one. Haven't tried it meself, but play for damage when trying to win, and play for beacons when trying to lose?
When playing for damage, even if you lose, when you are the top or 2nd best damage dealer in your team you will gain league points and go up. When playing for beacons, damage dealing generally suffers. So if you win, you won't get too much league points, and when you lose, you will suffer a lot of lost league points.

Just play if you like it, you'll be positioned where you belong. What he said. ^ Eventually, you will find your niche, and gradually level up according to your bots’ firepower/durability. Can go up and down.

If you keep at it and make it to C, you stand a good chance of getting -5/-11 a lot outside of squad (solo). It still can be fun, but you stand only a slim chance of victory in most of these matches. Usually there is a master or two tanking or fading, getting the -17/-22. Much of the time your up against other C death squads. When I squad w/clan, we're one such, and the most enjoyable matches are against other similar death squads, not randoms/solos. Others have said this before, it is true. The cup penalties for losing in squads are also less severe. If this doesn't appeal to you, be content and enjoy the game wherever you may be, and don't be in any hurry to move up.

I’m in no hurry to move up. I’ve gotten fairly decent at the game, at least as far as my equipment can carry me, so I’m moving up naturally. Aside from when I get a team of lunkheads, that is (seriously - Beacon Rush, Domination...why play it like team death match and ignore the beacons?! ??).... I just don’t want to reach the point that I’m up against squads of L10 and Mk2 players who dispatch my L6 hangar with a 10 second burst of fire.... ?

Mostly lvl 6 on bots and weps. Playing some matches while having breakfast, some more on lunch, and a bit more before bed. We, you and I, will eventually meet those random Mk2 bots/weps every once in awhile. For me, those Mk2 stuff are bonus. If I loose, no one care. But if I can somehow manage to kill one of those, I usually do some kind of dance on top of that Mk2 wreck. (^_^)v

Gold is a good level for casual play. Most of my boots are 8/8 and I've maintained myself in Gold for a while. You can float between 1 and 3. I run a Gareth, Galahad, Kumiho, Hover, and a Patton or a Rogatka. I go for beacons and damage. I've not noticed a lot of obvious tankers in Gold. I made it Gold 1 then did some experimenting which dropped me to 3 and now I'm back in 2.

I play oscillating between gold and diamond. You can try 6-pack. You can also try (what I'm doing) levelling up what bots you need to lv9 to max out speed. And keeping weapons at lv7. Ive also levelled some mediums to lv12 and 1 or 2 lights to mk2 to max out hp. I keep most weapons at lv7 except tulus, pins, spirals and hydras to lv9 just to keep them at par with the other weapons. I also did that with a quad of aphids but that was due more to a perceived bug that lowered their damage on a jesse. Its not foolproof though, once you slip past 54%, MM takes over and slaps you back in line.

In general, the more damage you do, the higher you rise. If your damage is relatively low (compared to the other players on the blue team) then you won't rise as fast in wins and you'll fall further in losses.
Remember that damage isn't the only way to be useful to your team. Getting beacons is very useful for winning, but doesn't do much to your league score. Same thing with knocking down anciles and physical shields. The damage done there does nothing to your score, but it makes it much easier for your fellow blues to take down the reds.
