I predicted I would quit in 2018 and pretty sure I am at the end of my time in War Robots. Figured I would give out my thoughts on the game so here you are.
First, a little history.
I began playing this game just before the dash bots came out...whenever that was. Starting out I just played and bought bots as I could afford them and not really paying attention to what I needed to compete. Even ran a Destrier up to level 12 with level 12 Pinatas. As I leveled up I realized I needed to determine what the higher leagues used so I found this forum. Very helpful so thank you for that. I started to ramp up my bots and learned to play quite quickly (more on that later). I actually got a Kumiho as a reward from a bronze chest which would be considered insane now. So eventually I acquired more and more until I was at a point where I could turn the tide of a battle quite easily. Needless to say the game started getting to be more of a tedious set of tasks rather than an actual game. Now I am in Champions League and pretty much only play Skirmish and collect my goodies as they add up...ads, gold, drops, WSP. The game has become somewhat boring as I feel I spend more time trying to level or acquire bots and weapons rather than actually play. I am a highly competitive person so just sitting around a lower level or league is not for me.
Problems with the game.
Pretty much a rehash of everything ever discussed. Matchmaking, netcode issues, hit registration, targeting system, etc. This goes into the my belief that Pixonic is now a sales company and not an actually game company. Before I started playing this game apparently it actually took skill and strategy. Now it is a casual gamer 「fluffernutter」 fest with content designed to make it easy and create revenue. I wish I had been around when it first came out. Today all I see is the need to get the best bots and weapons instead of learning to play or actually having a game plan. He who fires first with the highest level bot and weapon wins. More importantly you can throw real money at it and rule the roost. The grinding of bots and weapons was fun at first but with the upcoming changes that have been hinted at it will be again...tedious. Watching YouTubers running around with full MK2 hangars and winning every battle with better HP and damage potential and then making comments on why they won as if it was skill just makes me want to throw up. "Wow! I just took out two Haechis (with my fully maxed out MK2 bot of doom)...I used my better skill to wipe those lowly level 9 turds."
The biggest issue...the player base.
I don't think I have ever played a game with a more incompetent, selfish group of people ever. Most games have their griefers, cheaters, glitchers, idiots, and morons but this game puts it in a new level. Sure I can lose battles and matches due to a mistake or better players on the enemy team but the amount of losses or complete wipes due to tanking, beacon avoidance, damage hounds, and complete stupidity is beyond belief. It has always been somewhat of a complete cluster 「fluffernutter」 with what teams you get but to see it in Skirmish has made me realize this game is really at the bottom when it comes to competent, honorable game play. The player issues are not just in lower leagues as I see it in Champions League as well.
Now as far as how hard this game is to play this makes me cringe. I hear about the need for skill and the need for the right bots and weapons to do any good in here. I even believed that it would take a long time to get to Champions League as I didn't have the ability or bots to get there. Of course then I decided I would make a run up doing what needed to be done to get to the top. Max damage in most modes and capture points in KOTH. Pretty much doing this I keep a decent win average and climb up...but how easy is it? Well the pics are below. First one is the day I made it to Champions League just before the anniversary event and second is during the anniversary event. You may say I leveled my bots pretty well so that helped me get to Champions League but I only have FOUR BOTS. I have spent $0 on this game. Yes I still have a 4 bot hangar.
So currently I am sitting in Champions League collecting my boxes with over 400 Champions League cups and a 4 bot hangar. This game ain't that damn hard. If you have higher level gear than I do...and mine is getting higher constantly...then you need to be already in Champions League.
Tips and advice.
First...it is great to play on a phone or tablet but emulators will make you a god. Get one and use it. PC is the master race.
Second...max damage for all modes except KOTH which you need to get the most capture points. You can't go up in a league if you only come in last place all the time. In fact...since Pixonic does have their head up their 「bum-bum」...even in a loss you can go up as they give positive points to the top players. Long range snipers don't get a lot of points. You should be mid-range to brawling to get the job done and fast bots for KOTH. Additionally if you do this it helps your team and gets you wins.
Third...if you have no desire to get to Champions League then don't. You don't have to bust your balls as the level of skill in Champions League is not this giant above and beyond every level below it.
Fourth...I don't squad or play in clans but you should if you can't win alone. Your friends will get you there easier and you can learn a thing or two.
Even the whales can't compete against the tankers...
