So, basically, this is a rundown of when and why the M.E.T.A. shifts as well as how to predict and plan for future shifts.
When does the M.E.T.A. shift? The M.E.T.A.(I keep writing it like this to emphasize that it is not just bots or weapons, but rather tactics in general that are shifting) normally changes when a new tactic or strategy emerges. The hardest tactic to counter is one that has not been encountered.
It may seem that in the past M.E.T.A. changes have been due to certain bots or weapons. That is not true. Those bots and/or weapons just made certain tactics either easier, more obvious, or flat out possible.(Dash, stealth, double jump, hover made ambushes and guerilla warfare much more viable along with many weapons released or buffed at the time.)
As the battlefield evolves people learn how to defend against and counter these "new" tactics. Then, inevitably, a new tactic will emerge and begin the cycle all over. By studying and anticipating the tactics being brought into play by new equipment and techniques you can not only plan for and counter them before they are even given birth, but also anticipate the next counter tactic before it is even considered.(Bulwark and Falcon both work great against ambushes. What are the 3 most effective weapons against stealthed bots? Shotguns, machine guns, short range rockets. Hmm?)
War is a constant match of rock, paper, scissors with endless possibilities. By understanding that the M.E.T.A. is in a constantly shifting state you can learn to assume a more adaptive approach towards battle and learn to anticipate which tactics will be used against you and how to deal with them appropriately.
In the words of Bruce Lee, "Empty your mind. Become formless, shapeless, like water". This is why I encourage diversified hangers and leveling as many different bots and weapons as possible. If you limit yourself to one or even several playstyles(even if it's M.E.T.A.) then you will have a very difficult time adapting to the inevitable "rock" to your "scissors". Most of the time the right tactic with underlevled gear will be more successful than the wrong tactic with overpowered gear. Understanding ALL the bots and weapons(not just the ones that are easy to use or everyone else is using) is key to reading changes in the M.E.T.A. as it allows you to better perceive how new content can and will be put into use.
By opening yourself to the multitude of tactical deviations you can easily read how any opponent will react to new possibilities or restrictions. One can learn to manipulate the M.E.T.A. even within the confines of a single battle by simply shifting their own tactics.(yes, the M.E.T.A. can shift in battle. If you have a Bulgasari shocktrain going 1 on 1 with a Galagad or even Gareth then the Bulgasari "Noobtrain" is NOT M.E.T.A.)
Study the current M.E.T.A., not to emulate it, but rather to evolve it. If you think that the overall playstyle is leaning towards a certain M.E.T.A. familiarize yourself with it, but do not perfect it. Focus your efforts instead on perfecting its counter, as that will be the inevitable new M.E.T.A.
