Searching old threads I can see some initial recommendations - I think I've done the first steps reasonably sensibly:
1) 5th slot
2) Orkans x2
3) Rog
4) Gareth
(I also have 1 aphid from an event)
Firstly I'm not a "whale"/big spender BUT do buy the 200-300% profit 0:99p Au offers and got the Rog on a 100% profit offer. This seems an efficient way of getting a bit of extra gold and it adds up quick with the tasks and 5-10Au from battling.
What are my next priorities? I am thinking about
1) 2 more Orkans
2) A 2nd Rog (I love this robot....)
3) A 2nd aphid?
if I got a 2nd Rog I'd be running 2 Rogs (1 Plasma and 1 Orkans) and 3 Griffins (DB, Punisher, and either RDB/Molot).
I'd also keep my Gareth upgraded to deal with light robot tasks and Beacon tasks.
What would you suggest my 2nd wave of purchases should be?

Definitely two more Orkans next, but...
There is a Christmas event coming up. There will be lots of freebies, in a few days there will probably be some info on what’s going for free in the event and what sort of grind you need to do for it. I wouldn’t buy anything until that comes out (as an example the last few have had an Orkan at a difficult but achievable level in the task chain).
After that its very much down to preference. I would be slow to get a second Rog now, your priorities might change as you bump up the levels. Long term you will probably want a Lance and an Ancile to make an ancilot. They are not fun like a rog, but very effective as things start to get though. You might also want a good mid range option, Zues are one of the best (you would need 2, on a carnage preferably or Natasha).
But wait until the event chain comes out, there should be some good stuff that is manageable. Also there might be additional Au for playing during the event, meaning you will grind up a pile more Au from play.

I would definitely hold off on the second Rog. adding two on any premium bot sounds nice, but you might get to a stage in the game where it's outclassed and doesn't offer the combat advantage/thrill experience you currently are enjoying.
Adding two more Orkans will always be in vogue. There are too many good load-outs that Orkans can go on. I'd suggest looking towards that next.

If I were a new player in the current dash era. That would be my list from the highest priority to the lowest:
Hydra upgrades speed up.
Noricum upgrades speed up.
Skins.
A ton of WSP.
Orkans.
3rd, 4th and 5th hanger slots.
A deck.
