Well, I see the point Vindictive999 is making.
Even more inclined to agree to the Golden Sabre point of view on the contests, but I think it's a good one to have.

Such kind of contests of course has everything to do with the show and\or with friendship, and a lot less with actually influencing people.
Why so?
I think everybody's logic goes like this:

1) One of the candidates is my friend\clanmate - vote for him. Do not try to look into competitor and see if he's been more helpful for the forum.
2) I don't like one of the candidates - vote for the competitor. Do not try to research the other candidate.
3) Don't know both of the candidates - skim through some of their posts and see if I like him.

Now only step 3 it would be about actual influence more or less.
If we are to judge by actual influence on the forum - we would need to have at least a little write up of the people's achievements and most notorious doings. But we don't. I do not believe that forumites would go as far as checking out "threads by contestant" in their profiles.
So all we left with - is a voting thread.

However, I think the good show is a good thing to have in our everyday lives, and it is a good thing it's happening. That was actually the reason for me to post videos\pictures\quotes and stuff in my voting threads.
My point was not to get the IP, but more to make people smile and be active. I am 80% sure it's the exact point for other contestants. And we are NOT trying to put out a black PR, or make people feel bad about competitor.

So while that's "being active and trying to be fun" in my book, it might be perceived as "trolling for votes" in other people's.

(And that is no offence to either side - both sides have managed it).

One small note, though - I think there are more good people than the trolls. The internet pretty often provoke the worst in people, because it makes the wiring go crazy.

- Not seeing actual live people makes you think it's happening only on your computer screen.
- Lag and inconvenience pretty often turn up the annoyance way up
- Never knowing if the saying was a joke or not makes it ambiguous and sometimes offensive
- Different language, cultures and different standards of living play it's role too.
- Different income levels are playing the big role. In this exact context - winning 25K worth of IP could be a dream goal for some people and just "meh" for others.
- Sometimes technical problems like misquote\copy-paste are happening, so we should be aware of that
- You never know if the person on the other end of the wire is drunk\replaced by drunken friend\was fired from a job\lost a friend, which could trigger some weird reactions.

So I think it's only right to assume that everybody is a good person up to the point you can't believe that anymore, and in that moment just to remove yourself from conversation.

On topic, though - let's see who's the current most popular person and true master of the ceremony!

In order to avoid giving the impression that I attack you publicly, I just tried to write you privately to give you my thoughts on that topic. But to my surprise, I just realized you blocked me so I will write it here.

I by no mean want to attack you Russel, but I think that for somebody who seem to give a lot of lessons, you may want to try to apply some lessons to you first. In six months posting regularly on this forum, the only person I had a problem with is you. That you disagree with me about the Ecu being kind of underpowered is one thing. That you gave very questionnable arguments to counter my opinion is another thing (Ecu being stronger than Gareth when it's only marginally true at level 12... I'm not even talking about Raijin or Lancelot because that's completely irrelevant, those robots having several in-built shields). I found those arguments very weak, but fine. The most shocking part for me, and the one that has been the hardest to put behind is the way how you attacked me in the end, in a very rude and harmful way.

For me, and it's just my opinion, this kind of behavior is the exact opposite of what a Mr Influence should be. So what I wanted to say is this : giving theories about others in one thing, applying those theories to ourselves is always the hardest part and I think you may also think about this because that kind of behavior was definitely not appropriate IMHO. And the fact that you blocked me following that conversation make it even worse, again, IMHO. I regret that decision BTW as it forces me now to write this message publicly while I clearly preferred to go the private message way.

To put things in perspective, I think you obviously bring a lot to this forum. Ironically I even said I had fun discussing with you in another thread a week or two before that incident. But I just think that for somebody who seem to give a lot of advices, you may want to think about your behavior also, because it has been far from being ideal in some situations IMHO.

Just my two cents. I hope you will not take it too personally. And I apologize in advance if some of my comments may look rude, that's not my intend at all and this is why I tried writing to you privately initially.

I just voted. I think both of you are great contributors. I actually did what Russell suggested and went through prior posts/threads and it's no wonder both of you made it this far.

That being said I didn't vote for the candidate who sent me a random pm asking me to get my clan to vote for him.
