Keeping in mind that I'm a looooooowww budget player whose Au's and WP's are hard to come by, and I'm just not in a spot to be pumping real $$$ into the game, I'm eyeballing a Rhino and thinking of saving up my WP's for one before spending them on weapons. I'm still fairly early in the game (just hit level 27 tonight), so I'm not in a good spot yet to be buying expensive bots just to try them out (did that once and ended up scrapping the game and starting over from scratch). I like that it's basically the same weapon setup as the Griffin, just slower, and with Assault mode instead of jump. Does the shield and Assault mode make up for the big speed trade-off? Worthwhile purchase, or are weapons a better choice for WP's at this point in the game?

Weapons 100%. 2-4 turans and 4-6 mags and possibly tridents before getting any wsp bot. Carnage is probably a better choice than rhino, though I personally prefer running the rhino.

If you're not paying, you're probably a ways away from orkans, so a third plasma bot would do well. Hold off on the tridents unless you're planning on sticking them on a carnage, Tasha doesn't have the same reach as fury (because pins) which gets it shredded by pin/Tulu bots, carnage is the safer choice because of 600M range, mobility, and an energy shield that will help against anything except Zeus and Trebuchet at those ranges.

Buy weapons first. Switch every Punisher and Punisher Mk2 to Tarans and Magnums on all your bots.

I made the same question some days ago, here you have the link to the thread: war-robots-forum.freeforums.net/thread/6608/rhino-danger-extinctionI must add, that I still keep my molot/rhino, it works fantastic to get rid of snipers. Every day I use it I become more comfortable with it, but I warn you, it requires patience, but the outcom is worth the effort. Answering your question, if you have little WPs and want just to give the Rhino a try, you better don't, the first time you play one is generally disappointing. If you are really in love with it, then buy it and be patience. Maybe there're some WP weapons you'd like/need to buy first. Do you have tridents? Trebuchets? Are you planning to play with them?

I bought the rhino first and I regretted it. I got the carnage later and recognised that it would've been a better purchase. If you already have one, get two Tridents to stick on it. They aren't real effective until about level 8, but you can play them on a Natasha with pins while you're levelling up. It just gives that little bit more firepower. Since the update, you can press the red button once at 600m and you don't have to waste your pins until the reds come into range. Some prefer the Natasha setup to the carnage (it's often considered the poor man's trident fury) as they prefer the option for the additional damage. Just don't go head to head with other snipers, that's all.
Definitely recommend Tridents and Zeus since the update though. Being at 600m saves you some frustration with all the tulus flying around lately...

Rhino is very difficult in the beginning, but as time passes and you get more used, you are going to love it. Remember that the shield is not defensive but offensive and a long range Rhino is a waste (molots?!)

You can wipe snipers out rising/lowering shield to avoid trebuchet fire, at long distance it's harder to flank, and when you have to take offensive actions you still are able to. I've had a really good experience with it and can't consider it a waste, quite the opposite.

(I'm not an English speaker so I'm sorry if my language seems rude) Imo you can use molots better on a griffin, I love molots, you can shred a TT fury easily, but if you put them on a Rhino you neutralize the best quality of the bot that is "power running" for the beacon or for the close combat

Think as the molot phase as the first stage of rhino pilot learning. Distance gives you time to get use to its speed and manouver, and you have time to learn how and when rise/lower the shield. As you get rhino piloting experience, you'll want to mount other weapons and go deeper to heat of the battle. In my experience, buying a brand new rhino, mounting magnum and tarans and go to the hot zone without previous experience is quite disappointing, rhino driving is quite peculiar.

I know, I ditched the plasma rhino because of many shielded bots near beacons. Now I use an orkan/punishers Rhino (Hellgun Rhino?) and it seems to me more effective, however I think that the first thing to consider using a Rhino is that you're surely gonna die but try to die bringing with you as many reds as possible

I never played with one in my life . It seems solid but I really dont like the idea of Rhino shield blocking two of my weapons . I would recommend any other WSP Bot before the Rhino.
Dont we all have an equal amount of WSP ? XD

Best way to get destroyed with a Rhino? Staying shield up under enemy fire. I'd recommend an other WSP bot too, maybe a Carnage

I have a Rhino in my hanger that I have not used in a long time. I see very few on the field now, but they have popped up from time to time as mid-rangers (Pin/Tulumbas), which seems interesting, and a set of Molots on the side might be useful too.
In general, the idea of the Rhino was to charge in with shield up, allowing you to get into burst range without taking damage, then drop shield and unleash hell. When they first showed in my games they were juggernauts. Now, with other more mobile and powerful shielded bots and all the missile weapons around to deal with them, the Rhino is struggling to find its place. I think a little more speed with shield down and removal of the turning limitation would bring this bot back into the fray in a big way.
In the meantime, I'll try a mid-ranger or a combo mid-range (light) and short range (mediums) as a beacon-capper and let you know how it goes!
To directly answer your question though: I'd get a Carnage first. Make sure you have 2 heavies ready for it though!

4 of each Plasma, 2 Tridents, 1 Carnage. Would be my ideal purchase path in the pre-rocket-buff days.
Now, however, I'd potentially skip the plasma and go straight to the Trident phase.. depending on the current hangar that you are using. Many factors go into that decision... but getting 2 tridents on a Carny, now, in the age of RDBs galore, may be a quicker path to success; plus you can use Thunders on the Carny if you get the 3rd or 4th Trident and move on to Fury, Butch, or stick with 2 Tridents and get a 2nd Carny.
I am not saying don't get Plasma, just that it may not be the first and most important WSP purchase anymore... I would welcome debate about that, however. As "The Way" has possibly changed with the new mechanics. Maybe just enough to outfit a PDB Griff, first... hmmmm.
Now, as far as the Rhino... while I would not recommend it in the early stages right now... if one does go with it, I would suggest running either RDB or Molots, as well, for the initial 'learning how to drive' phase. RDB makes the most practical sense, but Molots aren't horrible... especially with the shield-eater mechanic in the works. I started my Rhino career in the RDB configuration, before settling on the pure DB. Then I stopped playing it altogether.
I do think I will be putting one in again, soon, as I like to rotate out bots and weapons for fun. I haven't been playing for a week or more due to RL so will have a fresh outlook on it again and will hopefully not be as jaded as I was. Although, the new influence points have REALLY pushed me further into apathy... but I digress.

To say the Rhno was meant to charge in with shield up is like following the weapon recommendations when buying a bot..... Not recommended . I bought the rhino with my very first WP points and never looked back. Amazing bot. I have 2 thunders and piñata on my Natasha that eats carnages all day. Carnage is fast and mobile, rhino is fast but not mobile. I have tulu, pins combo. The rhino shield stops all the treb Butches out there now. And it also works very well to clear pesky Galahad from beacons. I had molots and they worked well. I switched to pins because I put the molots on my Leo. I am still working on my Rhino. It is level 8 with level 8 weapons and competes real strong in Diamond II. All my other bots are level 10-12. My level 8 rhino hangs in no problem. I have no issue with a slow bot tho. It is a play style choice. And remember, you get 100% speed boost with shield up which it is ok then. It's just like driving a container ship.... Takes 3 miles and 5 tug boats to turn with the shield up. It does take time to learn how to play. And just because you have a shield doesn't mean you can single handed fight the whole enemy team. You always have to be aware and find the 1 on 1 match up that favors you.

adrenachrome - The Rhino is one of the last bots I'd take in a 1 v 1. Anything that's not Plasma will beat it and it's easily dominated over by all the Britbots (except Gareth).

Considering most Brit bots run a Taran and 2 magnums mainly... I fail to see how it's dominated bye Brit bots. It's the #1 thing I use to kill Brit bots. Drop the shield and I have plenty of health and manuveralability to crush a Galahad. Pop the shield back and reload my tulu. While he goes pew pew pew with his magnums LOL I think it's one of the best bots for 1v1. I frustrate and kill plasma Griffs all day. Rockets kill it.... Then I pull fujin now the red has put on rocket bots.... All strategy

In a 1v1, no Galahad will just stand there and just shoot at the shield. They would come at point blank and circle you, as what I do to all Rhinos which do not have a Death Button setup. Any type of Rhino (except Plasma) against an Ancile Lancelot would lose and every Rhino setup will lose against to one with Thunder Orkans.

And with 500 meters range and huge tulu splash... Rarely do Brit bots get near my Rhino.... And when they do it's cute to watch them run in circles going pew pew pew... As I wait for my reload. Get down to about 30k hit points drop my shield and evaporate the little pest.... Next

In this meta game, do not buy a Rhino. I have been playing with one for almost 1/2 a year and I've finally benched it due to the RDB + mid/long range party + Buffed Orkans. I used to power run beacons and have it die a glorious death. Now it is getting blown up before I even get to center beacon and without firing a shot. It does not fill any role I need it for where another robot won't be better. If things swing back heavily to plasma (or even bullets) then heck yeah, I'll dust him off.

Plasma works too, but takes longer. Rhino has the hp to soak up twin Orkan fire, and has the speed to charge up under Ancilot's shield and unload face to face. You'll feel it, but the lance will be dead.

Russian Rhino -> Tulumbas Pin Rhino DB Rhino -> Orkan Pinata Rhino Plasma Rhino -> Taran Magnum Rhino Hellfire Rhino -> Orkan Magnum Rhino Reverse Hellfire Rhino -> Taran Pinata Rhino May I ask, which League are you in? Perhaps the level and skill of enemy british bots cannot be exactly compared to the ones we face. Ron Gaul - The Death Button Rhino would not be my choice for a Lancelot killer (and by that, I assume you mean a Lancelot without an Ancile). In a DB Rhino versus a Lancelot, the victorious bot will always suffer much damage and missing weapons. I believe the general and the most basic strategy of the game is to deal damage while taking no or as little damage as possible. For me, my anti-Thunder Lancelot bots will be the Death Button Griffin or the Orkan Pinata Galahad and my anti-Lancelot bots would be the Thunder Orkan Lancelot or the Plasma Galahad.

Jazz, I just bought a third Rhino. I've actually found the Rhino to be stronger now; it has more hp than Griffin, making it a better choice for tackling tough targets. I typically drop RDB griffin first, to counter other rocket bots. Second is an Ancile Golem, for pissing off the rest of the red team and dealing with the remaining rockets. Played right, by the time I start dropping rhino's there aren't as many rocket mechs left on the red team. And that's when Rhino comes into its own.
