Standing Watch
He is not standing watch tonight,
Yet, his post won't go unmanned.
The flag he served is folded,
Placed in a loving mother's hands.
Taps sweeps across the valley,
Shots in unison they fire.
Above the field of Honor,
Stands a ready angel choir.
Sleep well my fallen comrade,
Do not mourn for undone deeds.
Our prayers are with you, Soldier,
May your spirit find its wings.
I wrote this shortly after 9/11 while stationed at Ft Leonard Wood, MO. as a tribute to all the military men and women who have sacrificed their lives in the service of our country. Several of which I have had the honor of sharing a foxhole with. Please take a moment this weekend to raise a glass and say thank you to those who keep us free.
