I've had this happen several times in the past week and it's confusing. Game starts and our team captures our 2 nearest beacons and then a third in less than 2 minutes. We then maintain that control of 3 to 2 for the rest of the game. As the game ends, we have more robots, the same beacons and yet lose to strategic advantage. I've only been playing about 3 weeks so maybe I'm not understanding something here, or could it be a bug? Thanks for any explanations.

The more beacons you hold the faster the enemy bar goes down. If both teams still have some bar remaining at the end the one with the most wins. So you must have had less than 3 beacons at some point. Also holding 5 beacons hurts their beacon bar like 4x as fast as holding 3, so if you lost all your beacons at any point it could have sealed the match.

Pay attention to the dominance bars. They'll show you how you're doing on beacon dominance. I suspect that in the heat of things you may lose track of overall beacon dominance. I know I do and I've been playing for almost a year now. I took this pic for something else, but you can see the depleting bars underneath on either side of the game clock.  |

Just to clarify, 3 conditions determine the outcome of a match.
1. Beacon bar: If either blue of red bar depletes, whichever team with depleted bar loses.
2. Timer: If the timer hits 0:00, then whichever team with shorter beacon bar loses.
3. Mech out: If a team loses all bots, that team loses.
You will have to pay attention to all of the above. 2. is sometimes hard to keep track, but it is also important. When the timer is reaching 0:00 and your team is winning (i.e. blue beacon bar is longer), then you will need to focus on surviving. If you mech out before the timer runs out, you hit the condition 3. above and still lose.
I am not sure what happened in your match, but I suspect it was one of the above 3 conditions.
