I have found that playing during lunch vs after work changes who I am playing against. I find that if I play around the same time every day the level of play stays the same but when I play a match early morning or mid day during the work week I am getting a wide variance of player skills, normally in my favor. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yeah I've noticed the same thing. I usually do better early morning and before lunchtime. If I play in the evening or on the weekend I feel like cannon fodder.

I play midday and late night US Central time, and usually drop league points consistently midday and then make them up late night. So unless I'm some kind of War Robots vampire, afraid of the sunlight, there must be some mechanism at work that pulls in lower level competition when there are fewer players online.
Of course this would get better if they would stop worrying about trying to make 30 sec and under matches. Let it go 1 min or even 1:30 before going too far afield just to make a match.

I experience the same down during the day and up at night but its more because during the day I keep getting teams who will not cap or who cap then run away from beacons both leading to more losses. At night it seems the willingness to cap and actually defend a beacon goes up. So I think that the problem is during the day you get matched with "lower competition" both on blue and red and its more that "I can't be everywhere" so it comes down to which team has the extra good player.

Makes sense.

It is my case as well. And to the extreme as well.
Depending on time day I may average all from 40% to 70% win rate! Damage average changes accordingly as well..

I'm up at 5am central to go to work, if I pop in for a couple matches I almost always get plowed under by better hangars/higher leagues etc. if I play at lunch time it's a crapshoot if it's a slaughter of me or by me, but evenings see some pretty balanced play, and as stated earlier, more players willing to go after and try and keep beacons. This has me wary of playing in the morning or mid day, I can drop a couple hundred cups at breakfast and lunch, after dinner it's a fight to get them back. I'd rather not yo-yo like that so I stick to evenings now.

Under the old MM I'd encounter an occasional clubber in the early afternoon but starting around 4:50pm there would be MagGeps everywhere, lasting an hour then fading off into the late night back to an occasional clubber.
Also, during the early AMs I'll see a lot more foreign language names. They could be here with me on the Pacific US but I'm probably playing mostly the other side of this planet.

4-6pm Pacific sees me doing far better than at other times. At 6pm the opposition leaps upward in power. Weekend mornings 8am - 10am are the other window of decent play. Around 11am the same thing happens.
It was why I made my run for 100% Victory on the weekend and quit playing at the stroke of 10 to wait for Sunday morning to ensure I made it.

Has anyone else noticed this? Yep! I played my best game at work around 8am EST when I was in rush to win before a meeting. I didn't stop to look around at the surroundings. I just marched towards the nearest enemies and slaughtered them. I don't remember which map it was, what level I was, which league it was (below Silver II which I entered into this morning), which robots and weapons I used, etc. I just opened the app, played a match, and dealt 700k damage... killed 6... captured 3 beacons. i.imgur.com/94fcv1N.jpg
