Posted to reddit, thought you guys here would also enjoy this little trip down memory lane! Might make a video of this if people like it.
Want to relive old memories? I’ll be taking you all on a trip through the history of War Robots, from humble beginnings in 2014 to the chaos we all know and love (or love to hate) in the present day!
Also, this list may not be perfect. If you see any discrepancies or missing links, don’t be afraid to comment and I’ll try to fix them!
Classic War Robots Era (mid 2014 - mid 2016)
* No real defined meta as the game is in its infancy
* Game is really slow, robots turn slowly and walk slowly
* Tankers arise, with the first tanking strategy being use of magnum gepard clan raids to drop into lower leagues due to the system being based on hangar points
* Fun fact: During this time, Anciles blocked friendly fire
The Golden Age (mid 2016 - mid 2017)
* Also commonly referred to as “the good old days”
* This is the age that 6pack league plays in
* Many robots are useful, but some standout “OP” robots appear
* Trident Fury is the dominant mid ranger
* TarAncilot is the close range META bot
* Death Button and Plasma Death Button Griffins were a popular pick as well
* Magnum gepard tanking is removed due to the league system determining matchups, tankers now dropped leagues by losing intentionally (this is still a problem today)
The Turning (mid 2017 - early 2018)
* When War Robots initiated the “meta cycle” that we see today
* Orkan Haechi dominates all old robots with ease
* The beginning of this era marked when loot boxes/event crates became a permenant part of War Robots
The Dark Ages (early 2018 - early 2018)
* Shocktrain Specter dominates everything
* Those of us who were there know this meta was a nightmare
* The nerf to shocktrain was one of the first examples of “overnerfing” in War Robots
Wildcard Era (early 2018 - mid 2018)
* During this era, massive amounts of new content was released, and there wasn’t really a single thing that dominated
* A lot of robots beloved by the community, such as Hellburner, Hover, Falcon, Mercury, and more were released and used during this time
* Older robots were still popular in top leagues when upgraded with new weapons, such as a Dragoon Fury
* The inverse was also true, newer robots like specter worked with old weapons like Orkan and even Tulumbas
Onset of Purple Shields (late 2018 - mid 2019)
* Pantheon is released. Ares trains become a dominant strategy with virtually no counters.
* Dragon Robots and Shapeshifter robots are released, but Ares Trains reign supreme
* Eventually Ares is nerfed to end this era
* Modules are released during this time
The Second Golden Age (mid 2019 - late 2019)
* Ao Jun, Fenrir, Phantom, Behemoth, Ao Guang, Ares, Hades, and Nemesis are all viable options
* Absorber bots are even less dominant due to the release of SB
* This meta is rather short, as Phantom and Behemoth are followed by Leech.
* Pilots are released
Parasite Period (late 2019 - late 2019)
* Leech is released and becomes extremely dominant, particularly with Corona or Storm.
* Few bots can stand up to leech, full leech hangars become commonplace.
* Leech is never significantly nerfed, rather, Titans trivialize Leech, making it no longer viable
The Dawn of Titans (late 2019 - mid 2020)
* Titans release in a poor state and are buffed
* French Ming becomes the dominant bot, able to kill enemies from extremely far away.
* The meta of normal robots isn’t too significant, it’s just a rush to get your Ming out
* After Ming is nerfed, Arthur with machine guns sees some play
Ravana’s Wake - Metas past this point are released much more quickly and last only a few months, so I’m going to stop putting dates.
* Ravana is released, able to hold down beacons for a long time while invincible and outlast leech. Most bots cannot stand up to this brawler
* Ravana’s ability was so significant that even after nerfs and years of new releases, Ravana remains somewhat relevant
* Scorpion is released and is the dominant scout type bot. This is another “evergreen” bot like Ravana that still has value today due to its useful ability.
* Nightingale is also released, and it is an incredibly popular beacon capper, although its nerf made is significantly less popular, unlike Scorpion and Ravana
Hawk Meta
* Hawk’s beam did a massive amount of damage from far away, coupled with an impenetrable reflector, Hawks were a dominant force for a while before they were nerfed.
* Hawks nerf was rather significant, and while it’s usable nowadays, there are several strictly better options.
* Drones release, and after their first rework, the dominant drones are basically any drone with a shield chip
Appmeter Demeter
* One of the shortest metas in War Robots history, appmeter was a menace that could be used in Demeter trains to make basically all of them immortal
* The ability was nerfed within a week and appmeter is a mid tier pilot now
Stealth Era
* Orochi comes up next, a robot with a huge amount of stealth abilities that could be continually cycled
* Probably the only time in War Robots where cloaking unit was relevant
* Orochi’s nerf was significant and the bot is not viable nowadays.
Return of the Dark Ages
* Those who were there know it, Fafnir was another one of those very much hated metas. Fafnir was abnormally fast and did insane damage.
* Somilar to Orochi before it, the nerf reeled it in quite a bit.
* The ice tasers were a popular pairing for fafnir; and we all know what happened to them.
Titans Evolution Period
* Most titans released before this point don’t have any form of super invincibility. Murometz was among the first.
* Minos and Nodens are also rather popular
* Before it’s nerf, murometz sees a spotlight later on when blinder guns are released.
* Murometz nerf turned it into a fatter Ao Jun.
* Revenant is released and can abuse drones to become extremely hard to kill
* Revenant is never formally nerfed, better options arise.
* Orbital support is released
Bendy Bullet Era
* Siren and Harpy as well as Smuta are released.
* Siren becomes dominant with Smuta, and Smuta is nerfed rather quickly
* Luchador is the best titan in this time
* Siren, Harpy, Luchador, and Bendy bullets are all still somewhat viable
Khepri Era
* Khepri is an all in one tank/support/attacker/scout that does everything best.
* This robot dominates in this era
* Khepri received multiple nerfs and is still a solid pick over a year later.
* Skyros is released after Khepri and is a solid beacon capper, but it’s overshadowed by Khepri and Seraph and never sees a meta of its own
* Worth mentioning, Gargantua Sharanga had a period of time to shine as the titan choice in this meta
Seraph Era
* Seraph is released and is broken
* Punchers dominate short range, rad guns dominate long range
* Puncher nerf was pretty bad, but the main reason it’s pushed out is due to better options releasing
* Rad guns are never nerfed and are still viable today
* Seraph is similar to Khepri, receiving several nerfs but still remaining somewhat viable
* Khepri is still promenant in this time
Angler Era
* Same story as Khepri and Seraph
* Khepri and Seraph are still promenant
* Claw, Jaw, and Talon dominate close range
Aether, Nether, Spear Era
* Same story
* Khepri, Seraph, and Angler are still promenant
* Spear with Otto kills anything
* Spear nerf takes it out of the meta for the most part, except for with otto on some bots
* Aether with glaive and lance is a menace that dominates throughout this meta and the following meta
* The nerfs have not officially come out but the test server changes look like they will really kill this bot and weapons.
Stealth Era 2.0
* The current meta
* Imugi, Lynx, and Beak are extremely powerful
* Crisis will release soon with anti-forcfield and reflector snipers
* Stealth is overall very much “in” right now
* Claw, Jaw, and Talon dominate short range
* Overheating lasers dominate long range
* Seraph is mostly replaced by Imugi
Well, that’s it for the War Robots history (at the time this post is being written). Big thanks to the War Robots Wiki staff, I did this whole thing with the wiki open and the research to create this wouldn’t have been possible without them. I’ll live you guys with some predictions for what I think will happen in future metas. If you’re reading this at a later date, was I right?
Future predictions
* Crisis will join in the stealth meta, and it’s snipers will be the beginning of the end for forcefield bots
* Since the meta is extremely focused on stealth right now, it’s likely a very powerful stealth counter will be released
* Additionally, stealth bots will have their stealth nerfed (ie imugi loses stealth on takeoff and landing)
* Titan pilots are on their way, and it looks like they will widen the gap between paying and non paying players further
* The same can be said for the new active module, unstable conduit, which is just an better, more expensive repair unit
* Rook will swiftly replace Aether as the dominant titan
* The titan cryogenics will dominate short range since they can bypass rook shields
* Ultimate specter and Orkan in their current state are rather weak and wont be worth the investment unless it’s rather cheap
