So I decided to grind for this Research Event. I am about to spend 10K A-Coins for the blueprints to take my Stalker up the last 2 levels to max (yes that's what it'll @!#*!! cost). And there's A-Coins to be won, so I figure time to grind!
But I was curious which mode would be the better earner: 5x5 TDM or CPC? My initial thought was it would be TDM because you have points for 70m+ kills and for kills from behind. But on an early test run, I got a lot of maps that weren't Rocket Mortars friendly (I know, right??). And while there is an MVP taks for 5x5, there's a bigger point reward for getting 1M damage in CPC. Plus CPC matches tend to be shorter time wise. Then there's the wildcard of teaming up to make sure you win all the matches and get the win in a row tasks.
So I tried a little experiment and set a timer for about 35 minutes, played TDM and then did the same for CPC. The time of day wasn't the same but I don't think that matters because the results weren't even close. TDM beat out CPC by a mile and even if I had teamed up and won all my CPC matches, it wouldn't have shifted the outcome.
For the TDM period I was able to play 7 matches for a total of 2,340 Research Event points, or 334 points per match. I won all 7 matches and in none of them did I draw a human opponent.
For CPC I was able to play 9 matches for a total of only 1,150 RE points or just 128 points per match. I won 7 matches and lost 2, which did break my win streaks, but even if I had won them all (by say teaming up) it wouldn't have added enough points. And I drew human opponents in 5 matches, with one of them being 2 humans in each team.
So verdict in. TDM holds a few big advantages. First the maps are usually bigger and allow for more 70m+ kills. Also you're not chasing beacons so you're not compelled to get close to the enemy. And the best weapons are either RMs or DLs, both of which can get distance kills and often kill from behind. Finally, TDM is less popular with human players so you're more likely to draw AI not just for wins but bigger kill counts.
Hope this is useful for anyone who's chasing this event. They definitely do this configuration of tasks from time to time, so it should be useful in future events too.
