In general, people often advise against this, mainly because if you fire the ones with a longer reach, you essentially waste the ammo of the lesser ranged ones. However, I’d like to offer some counter perspective on this, using Skald Blaze Blitz as an example.
There are two simple solutions that both refute the common advice not to mix ranges.
1) If you are intent on “saving” the ammo of the shorter range weapon, just play the entire build as if all the weapons have the shorter ranged limit. With Skald Blaze Blitz then, you only fire when targets are within the 350m range.
2) A firing tactic that some of you may have noticed Adrian uses sometimes, is he will continue firing all weapons despite his mech only being partially exposed, with only some of the salvo of one or two weapons reaching targets. What is the common result of this?
- He maintains combat longevity of that mech
- He maintains the full power of all his weapons by keeping them on the same empty/reload cycle
- He very often activates Last Stands or gets kills with these partial salvo hits
The reason I point out his tactic is it demonstrates that even if, for our example with Blitz, you fire the Skalds at targets beyond 350m and waste the Blaze ammo, if your Skald contributes to hp degradation, Last Stand activation, or the death of that target, does it really matter the Blaze salvos were wasted at that time? Nope!
However, imo if you are running a mixed range set up, it is ideal if the longer ranged weapons compliment the shorter ranged ones, as this would be the primary reason for a mixed load out. The Skald Blaze Blitz is a perfect example of this. Other functional examples might be:
- Shredder Blaze
- Shredder Toxin
- Blaze Rime and so on.
It is generally a good idea to consider the functionality of the weapons and the mech they’re loaded on, how you will use the build. I’m not talking about Swiss Army Knife builds where all the weapons are different, but of similar types of combos as mentioned above. A Blitz excels at brawling, so using two Spirals and two Blaze would be considered foolish because the Spirals will not work to assist in brawling, whereas Blaze Skald does exceptionally well while also allowing an occasional strike beyond the Blaze reach.
Lastly, if you are the type of nincompoop who can’t read weapon ranges or understand functional combinations, save yourself and everyone else the headache and just use all the same weapon or weapon types.
