I'm certain I'm not the first person to come up with this idea:
You will be assigned to a league based upon how much you spend in the game each month. The rating gets calculated as an average over the last 6 months.
Why six months? Because that's how long it used to take before your new just-released everything-killer got nerfed into oblivion. It might be shorter these days...
I'm comfortable to say this would solve nearly every source of my frustration with the game. Surely there would be differences in player skills and gear levels - but that is infinitely more fair than what's happening now.
Additional shower thought: what if they're doing this secretly already - but in an evil way? Making sure whales get their yummy dose of plankton regularly...

You are moved up to fight against higher level players because there are not enough players at that level playing at the time. Nothing more or less. On top of that this game is designed to make you lose 50% of the time no matter what and it doesn't care how it does it. I have yellow everything and still lose 50% when running solo. I agree it sucks but just telling you I a maxed player get placed against uber reds with only masters on my team all the time. It is what it is.

It would just need a safeguard against the exploit of people spending a bunch to get super hangars right before the six month mark, then not spending anything so they are matched against other, less powerful non-spenders.

People exploited this in the past and that’s their reasoning for not doing it anymore. But the real reason nowadays is: Whales don’t wanna fight whales. They pay for the satisfaction of crushing weaker players and winning. It’s not news that this game is pay to win personified. If you’re not the hammer then you’re the nail. They’re running outta nails...
