I wrote this after learning a friend and soldier I served with had been killed by an IED in Iraq. I printed a copy and hung it on a wall in our Company classroom. A few weeks later, I was asked if my poem could be engraved and presented with the flag at military funerals in the area. I was honored to be able to present the first plaque. Quite a humbling and unforgettable experience.
Standing Watch He is not standing watch tonight, Yet, his post won't go unmanned. The flag he served is folded, Placed in a loving mother's hands. Taps sweeps across the valley, Shots in unison they fire. Above the field of honor, Stands a ready angel choir. Sleep well my fallen comrade, Do not mourn for undone deeds. Our prayers are with you, Soldier, May your spirit find its wings.
