I've played many a mech game and I was curious as to what other folks wany from them game-wise.
My favorite two Mech games are Armored Core series and the now long retired Exteel (Never a NCsoft customer ever again after that)
Armored core games(nothing announced this gen as From Soft has turned to Milking Dark Souls) have the highest level of customization out of any mech game I've ever seen, but from this, and it being primarily a single player game, balance in the utility of these items is limited. This series always had a cult following, but the devs changed a great deal of the game's principles for the worse at the turn of the generation (ps3,360) causing the multiplayer scene to have little traction. AC games are known for having a high skill cieling, and being notoriously difficult for anyone not paying attention. The only mech game where you can 100% guarantee your defeat before ever playing a single mission, but a special place in my heart.
Exteel was almost purely arena play. Balance was pretty close to perfect, even when new content was introduced. The bots and customization were pretty straight forward, and it was pretty obvious what was good, and what wasn't. Every class of weapon was useable, (melee, shootemup, snipers, midrange) and gameplay was fast paced. It died from poor excecution from the devs, the original game server and developers were KR, and new content was often posponed for 6+ months se of coding issues when porting to IN servers. It was fremium, but most of the payed content was either alternate high end gear, Mid grade gear, cosmetic, and certain permanent counterparts to other items that could be purchased for a time limit with in game currency. They werw adding "operators" which functioned as this game's "Premium account" and consumables like extra storage (inventory space was limited) bot slots (every player earned more in game, bots respawned on exponential timers until the match was over) when a fault in coding delayed the release for almost a year. They closed the game for recenue issues, but didn't exert any effort to fix their payed content.
What would you guys/gals want from the perfect mech game?

Customization, so I can a run a super slow bot that's as durable as glass but puts out 200 lrms every second.

Anyways, best mechgames I have seen are War Robots(best mech game for mobile), MWO, Hawken, Armored Core, and Chromehounds.
I don't have much experience with any older mech games like MW4 mercenaries.

Check out Mechwarrior:LivingLegends (complete Crysis overhaul). Was stopped due to MWO licensing problems, but I just read a News that it will be continued. Also ch3ck out the upcoming (2017) Battletech by Harebrained Schemes. Backed it on kickstarter without thinking twice. Its gonna be a neat application of the tabletop rules, gorgeous graphics (they got the models from MWO) and I really love the company (Shadowrun:Draagonfall was a masterpiece). check out the pre-alpha-gameplay vid on YT - its worth it (those who dont laugh at a certain headshot never played the tabletop ) Edit: and everything I ever wanted was MWO as it was planned originally...-.-* Edit: and some of you might give titanfall2 a try. Not exactly Mech-only, but for me its my winter 2017 shooter (never liked BF much and always hated CoD). Movement, Aiming, Balance, Gunfeedback - everything is perfect. PLUS it has Mechs (even one with a big sword ). And dont avoid it.cause u think ure too old.for fast shooters - I thought that initially, but all the Quake and Unreal reflexes came back, now I roflstomp kiddos by the dozen @ Strayed: u still play MWO? PM me if interested in a round or two on the weekend, would dust off my Account...^^ Edit: and I voted "Design". Nothing beats an Atlas DDC majestically marching towards battle, a Catapult jumping out of cover to unleash his weapons, a Timberwolf shredding his opponent in a hail of rockets and lasers... yes sir, I am a sucker for Battletech

Great guys! Wish more people would commment. strayed: So, weapons that bomb just about anything, on something slow and fragile. At that point, why not just use a big fat fatty? Most games that have weight ratings effect speed give the heaviest load capacities to fatty parts in exchange for crap mobility. Strapping overweight weapons to fragile bots means they'd be overencumbered and fragile, the only ggame I've seen sommething like that be any kind of viable is armored core, where light (&biped in general) bots have to take a ready stance for heavy weapons, and can ditch them to drop their weight rating when enemies get too close. Exteel had it so that pretty much every bot combo could carry pretty much anything, weapons on standby weren't factored into weight, heavy weapons took both hand slots, and Energy (boost etc) was drained on weapon switch according to weapon EN drain cost.

It's a reference to an mwo joke video where a guy made a giant slow bot with paper thin armor that could pump out hundreds of lrms per second which was the meta at the time.
I do want more customizability though, it would help a lot when making setups that complement people's playstyles more.

I may be a minority in this... But I loved the detailed management of armor amount, weapon loadout vs ammo, energy consumption, and detailed damage of the MW series. Sadly, I have not had a PC in a while, and cannot check out MWO... but I would if I could.
Also, single player story. I love playing military/sci-fi campaigns that tell a good story. The MW series did a pretty good job of that if I am not mistaken... been a while. Halo (Bungie era) did an outstanding job of telling a story and letting you play it, without getting bogged down in too long cutscenes or crap missions that don't have any action. That is my benchmark. A Mech game that could offer all of that, and a multiplayer component, would make me smile.
EDIT: As far as the poll, I think that my post is a long way of saying, customization.

The customization of MWO actually degraded the game for an oldschool table-top BattleTech player like myself. I want a sense of immersion. Giant fighting robots and weapons are hard to come by, so you do the best you can with what you got while grinding away for something a little better. A sense of scale is helpful as well.

So, a sense of quantity in the world economy for non-General Issue items, and consistent world scaling? I always found it funny how in many games X item is 'The ultimate weapon wielded only by Y" but everyone and their daddy has at least 5. If a mech game had several smaller, performance and aesthetically different tuning/mod methods for each different piece of a mech, would that be more enthralling than, say, having cookie cutter X items? What I've always wanted from a mech game is something ridiculously modifiable, where users could essentially use templates to build bots ranging from something fairly simple (like destrier ) to something horribly complex (Like the Dino-Type Zoids whose frame was designed to have the whole damn bot function as a laser cannon)

I loved the Armored Core series, I threw so many hours into the PS2 versions of the game it was crazy. I would load up the game and spend hours in the workshop testing ideas and builds and optimising them to near perfection.
What was great about the game was how with a bit of tweaking you could build anything your heart desired and actually make it work. I never really felt like there was a single optimal build as there was lots of ways to counter (my friend and I would build bots and throw them against each other most weekends).

rip necros
I'd say Armored Core(obv). I know the mech genre by Project Phantasma, and i think the game has really wide customization. Following a YT channel that still uploads vids regularly a day, and a certain series shows how many customizations is possible.
Still, nobody mentioned Front Mission? I played only 1(DS version) and 3, though i do play it for the story, mainly.

I really liked Earthsiege 2. Boy, that game was realistic back then. The were many different weapons (rockets, missiles, lasers, miniguns, Zeus-like Flux), squad management. "Metal Fatigue" was a RTS, with customizable robots. You could use guns or a sword and a shield, you could even cut off your enemy's arm and switch it with yours But that was a long time ago...

I have always been a fan of the old table top battle tech. That system offered excellent balance and customization imo.
I have not played mwo much but am greatly looking forward to the release of the turn based pc battle tech game due out this spring.

I was always a Mechwarrior person. I even had the SNES version of MW (which sucked), and played most of the old PC games. The new one has me all kinds of giddy.
