These 「fluffernutter」ers are hard to kill. So think of this as a part guide and part hate about the ares. You know that 「fluffernutter」ing fly that's flying around your house now for days, you go grab your shoe and chasing it all around the house. Then you come back the next day, and your blood is boiling, so you end up breaking something. Then you say 「fluffernutter」 it, and bring out the bug spray and go nuclear on its 「bum-bum」 and burn down the whole forest kinda thang. Yea, that's what this is. Not a guide on how to kill those autistic mother「fluffernutter」ers, but those annoying 「bum-bum」 ones that toy with you for days.
=======
Grab the right bot and weapons.
For bots, i only use my fast and mobile bots as ares killers. If you're afraid of getting hit by that white goo, then wrap it up. If you want a trusted brand that works, then i recommend the Bulgasari. But it's only good for one use.
What else. We all know to use striders and HBs and Invaders. Any bot with a dash or jump can work. Personally, the Hover, Haechi, Bulgasari are what i have and use. I don't use the spec or Inky as much, but they'll work. Inky is a bit slow, so you really need to use that jump wisely.
I wouldn't bother to use something slow and tanky like my Bulwark or weyland. Remember we are trying to catch that fly that keeps getting away.
========
For weapons, lock down for sure if you have them. I don't have any yet. My main weapons are Tarans and Orkans. Pretty old school but not really by choice, just what i got laying around.
Tarans go well for hunting. Just have to know the pros and cons. Tarans will take ~10s to empty so you need to make sure ares has nowhere to run. And you will be taking fire during that time.
Orkans kill fast. Only about 4s to unload a full canister, and that will kill an ares. If the ares makes a slight mistake, the Orkans will delete them. Also less chance of them popping their shield again if you are chasing them because you can delete them before their CD. Also, less worry about taking damage, but you gotta make sure to finish them off.
Major downside of orkans is that ares is fast enough to dodge if you don't get close enough. Even if you think you have a clear shot, they'll slip away. So Tarans don't have that problem.
Redeemer. This is Tarans on steroids. Really good at hitting hard. I use 2x of them on my Ao Jun and go hunting Ares. Make them pay for their mistakes.

For active mods, i switched almost all my bots to lock down. You don't have to if you have proper lockdown weapons. That makes me very weak to stealth like Pursuer, Loki, AJs, mercs, etc. But the threat of Ares is too high in champs. Almost every hanger is running rampant with them, so 1/3 of all bots are ares. Even if not, late game a wall of ares will spawn and just crush everything. I'm finding that this change is overall better even if i lose Quantum Radar and some healing. But i don't use the green crack that much.

Putting this all together. You need to have all the pieces above for this to work.
You need to have the mindset of a hunter. Stay hidden and observe your prey. Figure out if it's an ares and if it's used its ability or not.
Do some probing for Ares. This is really important step! Don't just charge at it now matter how open it looks. This is to see how aware they are and if they've used their ability. Probing means stay behind cover and shoot at them. Then observe how they respond, what they do, etc. Basically, the idea is to learn more information about them.
If they are distracted or facing a different direction, then you got some free shots on them. Again, try not to break cover. Only if they are attacking someone else, then it's ok to break cover. You don't know whether they've used their ability yet, so don't get caught out in the open.
If they turn to face you or turn on their shield. This is what you want when probing, and the most likely response. You want them to trigger their shield, so you can start the countdown of chasing them. The idea is to give you a fresh 15-20s of purple free time to chase them. This is where the bot and weapon selection start to matter.
Once that happens, you'll have to decide if it's safe to chase them. You should have your jumps or dashes ready. You should have your ability ready (lockdown). Your weapons should be fully loaded. Yea, double check everything. Also the health of the ares, and any other nearby reds. You don't want to walk into a red trap either. This should have been collected during the 1st or 2nd step, either the observing or probing steps.
Once their purple shield wears off, it's time to chase them. They should be scrambling for cover now. If you got Redeemers or 3x Tarans, then hit them hard. If you're lucky, you might get 1 or 2 shots off which might be enough to finish them off. It's okay to leave cover now (granted no other dangerous reds). If you think you can finish them off or chase them with your current bot, then it's end of story here.
But if they are about to get away and slip into cover, you'll have to decide if it's worth it to lock them down. Tarans/Redeemers and other fast projectile weapons work best here to lock them down. A running ares is really hard to lock down with orkans and other rockets. If the ares is at full health and it's one of those impossible to kill ares, then i would lock it down. Again, you can tell during the observation and probing steps how smart this fly is.
An ares that was spotted out in the open far from cover, and he pops his shield at the first sign of trouble is a bad pilot that makes alot of mistakes. Easy to kill, and may not be worth it. You can probably catch it again later without using lockdown, but it's up to you. If he's not in cover by the time his shield wears off, then you've got yourself a slow one.
A smart ares pilot will always be running for cover when his shield is about to wear out. You won't catch him out in the open. If you do, most of the time you'll only get 1 shot off before he slips away. Alot of times, he'll hug walls and curve around walls and use it tightly as cover. This is a sign of a good pilot. He'll also use poles alot and play rope a dope with it, so it'll be impossible to catch him. Another sign is when you're chasing him, and you just can't seem to hit him with either tarans or rockets, and he finds a way to dodge everything until his ability comes back. If you are in the air or a higher/lower elevation, he'll go right under you making it impossible for your targeting to work.
If it's a good ares pilot, then use a fast weapon like Tarans to lock him down. If not, use your bot's chase ability (2x dash or jump). Get in range, then lock him down. Remember, that he's already popped his purple shield before you go chasing him. And your bot is locked and loaded, and you've been stalking him up to now. If he's already behind cover by the time his shield wears off, then you can still chase him if you know you can land one shot. You only need one shot to land, but you gotta do it fast.
=========
If you've done everything right, you'll be able to kill multiple ares and survive more encounters. Last stand will be a problem, but unless they're at full health and maxed everything. The full 15-20s you've given yourself to chase them should give you enough time to wait it out.
This works really well for those ares that try to weave in and out of cover. Like they go from cover to cover really fast, leaving you only 1 chance to shoot at it. Just wait for them to pop their shield first, then lock them down after. Otherwise you won't be able to catch them.
Also works for those that try to hide behind a red teammate. They wait for a red to attack first, then when you're busy attacking their friend, they pop out of cover and start shooting you. Then you switch targets, and they go back into hiding. Same thing, but now you can lock them and finish them off.
=========
Mistakes I made.
Don't go chasing them recklessly. Even if you think you have a clear shot.
Wait for them to pop their shield.
Use lockdown ammo or lock them down first with halo/coronas.
Use tarans or redeemers. They hit hard and fast. They are good to use with lockdown ammo.
