Can anyone theorize on why a Carnage with two thunders is able to take out a Gareth while firing head-on into it's shield? Has it always been this way?
I thought the Thunder was a physical bullet style weapon which should get deflected by the shield (until it breaks). I haven't noticed any other weapons other than rockets being able to do this.

Thunders can break shields quite easily.

And they spread so some go over, some go around, some go on each side.

Dual Thunders will wreck a physical shield really quickly, they deal crazy amounts of damage especially at close range. What you have to be careful of is how close the Carnage gets as well, the Carnage is tall enough to look over your dainty barricade and punch you in the face.

Yeah, thunder carneys like to hug. With top mointed hardpoints while hugging they are firing over your shield down into your head. Keep your distance.

I played a thunder/mag Nathasia in early level, I can 3-4 shots a Griffin from full hp to empty if I can stay within 30m. That 3-4 secs, keep your distance 200m+ the the thunder dps will drop 80%

Yes, part of a thunder shot can pass shields. More exactly, can pass near the shield's side and hit the bot's body, in the same way that molot' spread makes some bullets hit a shielded bot at a distance.
Minimal damage tho, in both cases.

Yeah it's fairly minimal.
Case in point, I just had a red Gareth going around all the way to the spawn point of my team. He could kill me fairly easily (I had a Guepard/Aphid, so it was simply impossible for me to touch him), and I spawn my Leo Thunder/Pinata a few meters away from him. I directly attacked him full force. He could destroy me easily at point range, no big skills involved, he simply faced my robot and fired at me with his combo Taran/Magnum. Over.
People can say what they want about the Gareth. But it is ridiculously powerful for a light bot.

Was he alternating Thunders? And how much health did you have? If you had <5000 health left, the spray alone from a few rounds would finish you. If he was alternating Thunders, then he could have easily broken and finished you quickly. I use Gary every game, and I've never seen a Thunder just "go through" the shield. The other possibility, people already mentioned, and that's you letting it get right on top of you and them shooting over the top of the shield.

Good advice. If the Carnage is already within 100m didn't back away firing with your shield in front. It's too slow and if it's is rush available it will still catch you. Put you shield to the side, point it at the enemy and run away sideways. This way you will create distance faster and have a smaller exposed profile for the Thunder spread to hit. When you reach 300m, turn and face as your shield flips in front and continue to back away while firing. Always try to find a corner to backpedal around to your left. You will avoid a lot of fire and the Carnage will run into your.

Don't let anything taller than you get within hugging range with a Thunder. What you see is what you get, and if it looks like the Thunder is shooting over your shield, you're right. Don't matter which shield-bot

I remember a game months ago on Shenzen and a guy had a triple thunder fury, Granted its a soft bot compared to the Carnage but, When he met up with a Galahad round the building from a beacon and just wrecked that bot. the Galahad walked into the Fury shooting at another bot down range and didnt even see him. The red Galahad got his shield busted and was down for the count after one full cycle of those Thunders. Good Stuff!

It has so much spread, so the flak hits the side of the bot.

Keep those Thunders at least 150 - 200 meters away from you. I take on Thunder Carnage's all the time in my Gareth, but I never fall below 150 meters unless I'm behind a corner, the Carnage is almost dead, or I have an escape route handy.
At 300-350 meters I'll dance around the field as I'm wearing down a Carnage. At range, with my shield up, I might lose 10% of my health before I kill one. I almost feel bad for some of those bad Carnage pilots that are out there...

took down lancilot with my thunder carnage yesterday on dead city: big boy was at harbour beacon. used rush around the corner, hugged that fat bot at 0m and let both thunders go. big daddy went down and cartny had barely a scratch.
THUNDER CARNAGE RULEZ.

Way to go! You guys just spilled the beans. Its bad enough that the gareth is OP, but you gave away the secret. Now every gareth pilot who reads the forums will stay away from the thunder. Just kidding.
If you see a bot standing in front of you unmoving/moving side to side or backing up but firing at you with his/her thunder. Have no fear. Stay within 300m and you'll be fine. But the bot who aims and fires his thunder while walking up to you means that you should be the one to back the F$&k up(that means that pilot knows what he/she's doing).Keep the distance as stated by the others at around 200-300 meters. If you can't help it and he/she is right in your face and you happen to have a faster bot, move and circle around it while backing up. This is because the bot(thunder) will have a hard time turning, aiming and shooting at you due to it being slow or its because the pilot has big thumbs for his small phone or small thumbs for his big tablet/ipad.
remember, the thunder is dangerous while its fully loaded. A spent thunder will fire a few seconds apart which means you will have plenty of time to back up, turn and shoot at him or her.

I join a group fight with my Thunder/mag Nathasia, at the time I was just reach level 30 (I was noob and so does the rest, sometimes PDB Or DB Griff even jump to me with full hp while I am half, I can still manage to kill them in the air) It was my favourite bots. It can take down 2-3 bots easily with 10-12 shots in 10-12 secs in group fight. i am not using it anymore, because once my rating go up. Nathasia hardly able to reach the range or position I want.
