I forget my 50 game avg damage but generally run a 6/8 hanger. On a whim I loaded up a ~4/5 hanger with the specific goal of making sure nothing was 6 or higher. In 7 games I saw no difference in team or opponent hangers. I eventually stopped because I was just hurting my poor teammates. I was afraid of what was concluded here - essentially it doesn't appear that hangar strength has any bearing on the current MM. Hopefully the leagues will address this by not being based on historical damage levels of your account and instead on the current hanger you are fielding.

If the avg damage theory is true, one potential strategy for newer players, who are grinding gold to build up their hangars, would be to employ a super beacon capper--like a Cossack with a max ecu. Fairly cheap, will get a lot of wins (plus the 5 Au) in noob matches, and keep their opposition fairly light since it will keep the average damage low.

Its been established hangar strength by level is not factored into MM, instead it is the output of the hangar by way of damage log.
Granted it isn't the best, it was probably the only way the devs could think of having the system differentiate between 3 lv 10 thunders and 3 lv 10 Kwk(nashorn) without having to add layers of spaghetti code.
