It is a single-player turn-based strategy game with mechs, developed by Subset Games. If you have played their other game, "FTL: Faster Than Light" you may be familiar with them.
You control a squad of three giant mechs and try to survive against the "Vek", an insect-like alien race. Your mechs are powered by the "grid", which in turn is powered by civilian structures. Let too many structures get damaged and it's game over. The game shows you how the enemy will move the next turn and you should plan your moves to counter them. At every turn you should balance your moves and make tough choices, i.e. do you let the vek damage the grid, or would you rather let them damage your mechs instead? You can even manipulate the battlefield so that you turn the Vek against each other or you can burn them, drown them, push them around etc.
Every mech has its own unique abilities that can be enhanced. You can also buy new abilitites and pilots for your mechs. If you master their abilities you can turn a seemingly unwinnable situation around. The combat is very deep and it feels a lot like chess. It's simply amazing how much strategy can fit in an 8x8 grid.
There are also role-playing aspects weaved in, and each level is procedurally generated. Apart from the starter squad, there are 7 additional squads you can unlock with in-game achievements and challenges. You can even mix and match mechs from different squads you have unlocked. All that provides great replayability.
I found it very refreshing and if you are into these games you may want to check it out. I was drawn by the mechs but it was the strategy that kept me.
