1 dog and 2 cats, they keep my Nana's vegetable garden pest free.
I once watched my cat bite a bird's head off.
What a gem.

Crazy dog adopted me actually. She's been gone for 2 years and somehow I can't bring myself to replace her. Kept me sane and functioning through a lot of rough times.

nocluevokSometimes I don't know how I could possibly bear to have another furry family member. Especially right after one has passed. Their lives are usually so very short in relation to our own. Like you my current little buddies adopted me, I never went out to purposely have them live with me. But somehow each one found their way to my home, either as pet dumps or orphaned, and my heart just would not let me turn them away. I once had a tuxedo cat that I named Loki. He was the only cat that I have ever actually picked to be a family member. As a kitten of nine months he once followed me to my place of work, 4.6 miles from my home. At the time I was riding a bike to work. I can only assume he sniffed out my trail on the streets of a busy town because the last I saw of him that morning he was sprawled on my bed asleep. An hour later he's scratching at the back door of the business I was working at. Surprised the hell out of me. I had to take him back home of course and he never did it again. Some years later I had moved and took up another profession, truck driving. I had to leave him with my parents since my company didn't allow pets in the rigs unless you owned your own. I spent 6 weeks in the company's on the road training program and another 6 weeks solo before I made my first home stop. When I got to my parent's home I was surprised by Loki actually sprinting down the dirt road towards my rig and the gate that I had to stop at before entering the property. I don't know how he knew it was me, but he jumped up onto the hood of my still running rig and was rubbing himself all over the windscreen and pawing at it trying to get in. I opened the door and he practically flew into the rig and onto me, jumping from the hood to the door frame and onto my chest. He spent more than an hour just sitting my lap staring at me and trying to get me to keep petting him and I very happily obliged. Company rules or no he became my riding buddy from that moment on. He never needed a leash and he never ran off. He lived 22 years and passed in the night quietly. I very nearly died when he did. It was lonely as hell out there on the road for a long time. I cry when I think of him because I still miss him so. Took me many years to bring myself to even think of having another furry family member. But I've had the exceedingly good fortune of having them come to me instead. And I have no regrets. I know they may not out live me but I can deal. I'm just happy to have their company for the time I'm allowed to.

My boy Riley was a rescue due to be put down due to behavioural issues. He'd has his throat cut and his first collar was never loosened and had to be surgically removed.
While I was at the shelter he was being taken out of his cage, slipped his lead and came sat on my foot.
I convinced the staff to let me keep him
The first two weeks he hid in a garden and only came out to eat at night. He was so scared of concrete he would urinate in fear when he walked on it.
It took 18 months of training and love but he became the best dog I'll ever own. Loyal, funny, loving. Smart as a whip.
He past away a year ago.
I'll get a new one once our bub is too (don't get a pup if you don't have 3 hours a day for training) but he'll never be replaced.

Dogs:
1 - Doberman (F - Lucy) 2 - (Standard) Poodle (M - Concho) 3 - Shih Tzu (M - Boagie)
Cats:
1 - Maine Coon (M - Mr. Red) 2 - Maine Coon (M - Austin)
Lucy is the alpha, of course. I love to tease my Poodle with Oud (Arabic fragrance oil):
"Concho Wanna Smell Handsome"
Any time Concho is in trouble or smells or sees something he doesn't like, he makes this hilarious Elvis grin. If we come home, and he's not happy to see us, instead he's over in the corner doing his Elvis grin, we know he did something bad (eating out of the cat litter box, eating off the counter, rummaging through the trash, etc.).

In that case, the one in the middle having a PTSD attack is the one who bit the bird's head off. From top to bottom: Danny Phantom (cuz he disappears in the night a lot, to join a cat gang i bet.)Joy & Louie Fun fact: Joy had a birth certificate when we got her. Her full name is Nurse Joy.Her previous owner was a huge nerd and i think that's fantastic.

But I've had the exceedingly good fortune of having them come to me instead. And I have no regrets. I know they may not out live me but I can deal. I'm just happy to have their company for the time I'm allowed to. I spent most of my last five years in the Army as an instructor, teaching knuckeheads how to drive big rigs. Don't have a nerve left in my body. ? Had a student out for his drivers test one afternoon. About a mile from the training pad, the right front wheel literally fell off the truck... at 40mph. Gotta hand it to that soldier for remaining in control of the truck and getting it stopped without panickng and killing us both. He looked over at me and said, " I failed the test didn't I?" All I could do was laugh. Fun times. Dragged a flatbed for three years after I retired, and like you, had to leave the puppy at home during my "training". After I got home, Lucy claimed the passenger seat and that was that. When we met, she had claimed our deck as her new home. She had had puppies recently and was covered with ticks. Took her to the vet, got the shots and chip, and the vet says he had one last test before she could take the heartworm meds. Tested positive. The vet says, Lucy would need 2 shots, and they're $75 each. What do you want to do? At that point I was already $150 into a dog I hadn't asked for, so $300 later, I had a dog that might, or might not survive. Best money I ever spent. Goofy dog would sit at the door all day waiting for me to get home from work. After my first wife died and I met my current spouse, Lucy made it a point to plant herself between us...on the couch, in the car, on the bed. Too funny, but I certainly miss her to the point of tears some days. The day we had her put out of her misery, our oldest was about 3. We came home and my son came running up to me with a book in his hands. "Read, daddy! Read," he said. The book was, "Muddy Paws." I didn't make it past the first page. I know she adopted me for a reason. And I know she needed me as much as I needed her at that point in our lives.

LoL When the forum's legendary profanity filter doesn't take into account that not every word that has ?poo-poo? in it is related to ?poo-poo?. BUT, to be fair, it is spelled ShihTzu rather than 「dookie」zu.

I love animals, and kept thinking "Awww!" while going down the list of people's pets. Especially seeing the photos. I think it would be great if you all would attach more photos! And more stories! Purdy please? ? Then I got to one that made me misty eyed.? The one after that had me sobbing.? I mostly recovered, continued on down the list, saying "Awww" again, or "Ohhh cuuuuteeee", and then one more had the tear ducts activate. I was thinking "Oh no! I can't imagine the grief this guy has gone through. My condolences." (I mean it genuinely, sincerely). I really wanted to reply to each one of you, but need to learn how to post multiple quotes in one post first. To everyone who has ever loved and lost a pet/s, I send my condolences. Sometimes that grief can feel so unbearable. Especially at first, but I still cry once in awhile about my cat who passed quite a few years ago. I don't mind crying now and then- it cleans your eyeballs. Back on topic...I'm down to just one cat. When my Aniisha (means just for fun in Ojibwe) passed in 2016, my other cat told me she wanted to be an only child. She's very possessive of me, and not very sociable. She was a rescue, and we got her as a kitten 7 years ago. Her name is Dash, but we've been calling her Dash-bot since February. She's my baby Dash-bot. ?? Pic 1. Dash-bot is a little skittish. Wide eyed like this means she's on high alert and ready to bolt if something startles her. It's literally as if someone hit the dash ability! Pic 2. Guarding the cupcakes. She loves watching all the food prep at meal times. Either from that stool, or from the top of the fridge. If it's chicken, she jumps down and rubs against my leg over and over, meowing pathetically. Her version of orkans. I usually cave in and give her some. ?

Currently: Down to 1 cat and 1 dog and an assortment of fish (plus 3 kids)
Until 2 weeks ago, we had a few chickens. We bagged that experiment, though, after having problems getting our inherited coop repaired in time. We will try again later, probably next Spring. Wifey would also like ducks. We'll when/if that ever happens.
Wifey wants to get 1-2 barn cats to help deter mice from the property. I don't know if she's considered how they would (or wouldn't) contend with the hawks, eagles, and foxes that are in the area.
