Self explanatory title. Requires the mecha to be controlled by a human or a being of some sort.
Thus Transformers do not count.

Will just suggest one because I like this Genre but Shinseiki Evangelion (Neon Genesis Evangelion), loved that one. Open for suggestions too

Evangelion is classic and will forever be so. But there are some pretty awesome other animes as well. Code Geass for example was excellent.
What about the Zords? Or Zoids for that matter?
I cant think of any non-japanese ones except Mechwarrior. Power Rangers are originally Japanese...

Evangelion is beautiful if a little confusing. I saw this weird mecha film but can't remember the name. Post apocalyptic world but it was filmed a bit like a film Noir style with huge mecha's. Hopefully it will come to me...
Closest thing to a non-Japanese mech is Warhammer 40k i think...

Haven't seen Appleseed Alpha, so I don't know if there is piloting of suits yet... but I would imagine that there is...

For me it all started with the one and only classic: Robotech, The Macross saga.
Damn that makes me feel old. But it was great. A precursor to many good things.
Full credit to Gundam, which Jay mentioned and was the originator of the genre, but I was a little too young and Robotech hit me square in my newly formed sci-fi nerd head parts.

Break Blade is a pretty good mecha manga. IT has five movies I think but the manga probably is better.

Knights of Sidonia is a pretty good manga as well, haven't seen the anime yet though.

Str.A.In I've heard is a pretty good anime and Cannon God Exxaxion is one of the best mecha manga as well.

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet is also fairly good.
Armored Trooper VOTOMS is a classic.
I can't think of anymore for now.
Edit: Oh dear me, I forgot Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

While not what many would consider, "The Best", it has had the largest influence on my from my younger years. The Harmony Gold Robotech series.

That's what I thought... Exteel's rope comment was from that amazingly awesome and cult classic movie... not a representation of a need for any medication.

Regardless Exteel, that language isnt allowed here.
Thank you guys for also mentioning Robotech/Macross. Totally forgot about that. THAT was classic. And while we role our eyes at Power Rangers, the original Japanese one was actually much cooler. And also much darker. And they had controlled bots, so I guess they count.
Interesting debate we could easily have here would be regarding the Unseen mechs of the BattleTech Universe. Many were Unseen due to the copyright violations that occurred due to the designs being ripped from Macross.

I grew up with the unseen, Superhero. When they were pulled, I started to lose interest in the game.
