I like the way you think, Koalabear! I just got my Hover (aka Diet Griffin) earlier as well and I'll also be outfitting it with shocktrains in the future. Currently levelling. I've tried mag/tarans, punishers and orkans on it. So far I've been having good luck with the pin/tulu combination. This bot is not only fun, but can move your weapons in a jiffy to where they are needed on the field. Its no slouch on foot either. With pin/tulus, they can exert pressure over a large territory. It also seems that War Robots cant measure distance diagonally. So the distance shown is straight from the hover to target mech at ground level. The hover's weakness seems to be its jump. Its way higher than needed. I'd be happy with half its vertical jump. I think the idea behind that big initial jump is to reach as high height as possible and then glide down from it. Makes sense that way. If they allowed you to gradually go up, you would waste a bunch of fuel in the beginning, but then with practice, you could do a Jetpack Joyride kind of thing and just skim across the ground. If they did that, we would be screaming about what an OP bot this is cause that skim would outweigh the dash in certain situations. My Hove is still low level, but I'm loving it so far. It rocked in Shenzhen. I was able to get onto the roof much faster than a Griffin, and I could waltz right to the end and be withing Orkan/Pinata range of the red home beacon. I toasted 3 bots from up there before tridents and tulus and pins got me. I'm salivating at the idea of Shocktrains or Vortex on this puppy. I started buying components again. I wouldn't mind another Hover!

I really don't know much about this bot but how does it beat a kumi to a beacon. The kumi has an average speed of about 105km/h. how does the hover trump that. does it glide that fast or something? I won the race AND the battle Thanks, that was close tho. And if I seen correctly the kumi guy got the glide right too.

I don't mean to dispute the idea that the Hover can brawl; I just expected that the Hover's combination of speed/ability/firepower it would work better as a midranger. Did you try using midrange weapons like Tulumbas and pins? I mean, 175k durability is good, but it is nearly the same as a Doc (171k). And an Orkan Doc seems like a better choice for an ambushing set-up because it can dish out way more burst damage than a Hover. I tried Tulumbas on my hover and I didn't like them. I found the Tulus to be weak/not practical. I recently acquired a Hover and tried various builds, including: Orkans/Pinatas; Tulus+pins; Punishers; Molots; and Tarans/Mag. I've found Punisher, Tulus, and Taran set-ups to be effective. Orkans/Pinatas were kind of meh—the hover can't escape like a Rog so I rarely lasted long. Molots were ok, but kind of underwhelming. When you tried Tulus, were they under leveled? I ask because I did not feel Tulus/pins were weak, unless the Reds were running lots of anciles.

aceboy44 I wasn’t aware that I’d formed any kind of opinion about the hover (positive or negative) but I appreciate your tagging me here. I’d been a bit melancholy and now feel quite a bit more love. You’re the bees’ knees.

I must be experiencing the inexperienced since I'm still murdering those things like tethered chickens. It's like a duck hunt...but with Thunders.

Aceboy, I don’t see anything that tells me how awesome the Hover is. Mind you, I like mine as well, but I have broken a million with the hover as my starting bot and getting 1/3 of the score. And mine is only level 8 and level 11 Tarans
As I said previously, if you’re in master league and using maxed mk2 gear on your hover and still getting the same score as me, something wrong, even with your disclaimer of using a fury as well.
I do think quality of opposition does play a role in the scores we get as well.
I’m not saying you are wrong about the hover. I agree it has potential and can be awesome in the right situations for sure. Just saying that the screenshots and stuff you are providing so far haven’t actually proven the argument you are presenting.
Maybe some of us have higher expectations than you are used to, considering some folks like Nix are Legends. But I’d have to agree that a Haechi is most situations would still trump a hover.

Hover pilot here... I love this bot. I'm sure others have found effective setups.. here's my $0.02. I write this as someone who finds plasma works best for him.
It's a "Super Griffin." If you fight it like such, you will kick butt. If you fight it like a mid-air sniper, you'll get toasted.
It's a beacon rush grabber if used early. You can grab the center "D" beacons on Yamantau before any other bot. Sometimes the same on Springfield--if you spawn by the wall side. The B beacon on Shenzhen is a quick safe grab most times. When you're beacon tasking, you can beat your own teammates on Moon Base by going over the wall--grabbing the closer of B,D or A,E to your spawn.
If you want mid-range--there are bots that make better options. Shocktrains work better on the cheaper Rog IMO. It has plenty of mobility, and a less exposing short "pop up" jump. Find your shot, pop and shoot. You don't need to Hover.
As a warrior.. This is my Orkan Haechi killer. It's not better than the Haechi in team play, but one on one they can't dash to cover, and it's so hard for them to shoot accurately into the sky at you. Not nearly as accurate as you shooting at them with Tarans from above.
My best setup is Taran/Mag--it allows you to be a vertical sniper. Approach your target on the ground. Many targets you can best without even hovering--fight it like you're in a Plasma Griff. If it's a physical-shielded, rocket, or dash bot.. get close and GO VERTICAL. It is so hard for your victim to aim up and hit you. Then you allow yourself to descend making for a more difficult target. Do not do this against Thunders! Instead, fight them at 350m.
As for being Sniper prey.. Here's the deal. Typically the later in the battle you use the Hover bot, the more you can fly around with it. The Hover has more HP than a Griffin. With Tarans--I can typically kill "do a number" on an un-shielded bot even if the snipers rip me up. Sometimes sacrifices must be made..
The secret to this bot is knowing when to fly, and when not to fly. Here's an example on Canyon map. If you fly around at the onset of the match, the snipers will own you. But then from middle to end of battle, you can hunt most anything down. They can't run, and they can't hide.
With Tarans.. Lancelots can be a pain. You have to hit them from above their shield. Contrary here... I'd rather fight an Ancilot than a Thunder-Lance. In general, use your mobility to avoid this fight until you have help. Leos with plasma or thunders, are a pain in the caboose too. They have more HP than your 2 med, 1 light weapons are meant for.

I ask because I did not feel Tulus/pins were weak, unless the Reds were running lots of anciles. Yes! My Tulus were indeed under leveled. Judging from your screenshots, I can understand why you've found Tulus weak—you're comparing under leveled Tulus to Mk2 Tarans. In my experience comparing level 9 Tarans to Level 9 Tulus, I find them both to be strong and viable: the Tulumbas build is excellent for supporting or breaking a stalemate situation; the Tarans build is excellent for ambushing. In fact, I've found the RDB Hover to be more effective than an RDB Griffin because the hover can get to so many unexpected/annoying places, and the increased walking speed comes in handy. If you level up some Tulumbas, I think you'd also be pleased with the results.

Best setup for it is scourage gekko and or shocktrain gekko. Any death button setup attempts on this bot is is not very viable or powerful. I wouldn't go close combat with this robots with orkans/pinatas/aphid/storm/gust. It would be best used as a mid ranger using the builds I mentioned above and if you don't have any of those I had fun using punishers on it. It's very fun but still no joke.

Agreed but piloting this robot is more skilled than using any dashbot and I would utilize its agility to quickly deal damage from a safe distance then move to another spot before you could be spotted. Run scourge is the most favoured by experienced players but tarans aren't bad considering its only one light spot from a PDB Griffin but faster, better ability and more health.

I don’t dispute that it can be piloted well against pilots with vague situational awareness, but against pilots who pay attention and hunt Hover, there will be no sneaking up on. For example, I have made it a point to try and hunt Shocktrain pilots, and even killed 5 of them in one battle on powerplant. The only way I feel some slight threat from the Hover is with a Shocktrain load-out, but even that can be dealt with, not just due to hunting them, but their ‘special ability’ is to, wait, whaaaat - expose their giblits! is that raiden?

I unload in the sky then the weapons shift downward toward the red. Problem is he has hit me a few times and i'm weak. Why? why wont the weapons aim down when the target box is down? I have tried to target lock but still they are pointing ahead.

Love my Hover (lvl 11) w/Molot Ts (12)/Molot (12). It makes a decent end gamer/capper as well as a start bot. TDM, not so much, but who cares.
As a starter (Hover/Molots), you can extend the life of blue Kumis, which will in turn get you 3/4 blue beacons in short order, for example:
Power plant: Go to either hill, around the time the Kumis cap, they will be confronting (other Kumis), hover leap and reach the red Kumi, they don't stand a chance Yama: similar, from either bridge (if you don't see Kumis, or there is only one Kumi at start, take the center beacon) Shenz: on top of the curved roof building Moon: walk to the ramp and shoot reds coming up their ramp if available, once the orkans start poping, hover up and fire into the red Kumis, you can reach any beacon location Dreadnaugt: on top, same thing, good cover there for the many treb/zeus shots that will come Valley: ramp side or very top of middle structure, again, watch your blue Kumis and shoot at whatever they are dealing with Dead: you can easily beat the kumis to the center beacon, so do it, then fall back quickly to support them Canyon: don't hover right away, wait until the Kumi confrontation at center then come in from 500-600 to ambush Springfield: depends on which side you start, it is not a symmetrical map, so if you start on the unfavorable side, you need to hover/fly straight away to compensate, if your start on the favorable side, similar to above, just get to a central position in anticipation to the confrontation
All of this is variations of the same thing. The red Kumi has to deal both with a close range orkan brawl and a Hover tapping it non-stop from 400-600 m.
Final thing is, watch and keep watching your blue Kumis and help extend their life. The patterns most Kumi pilots run are very predictable, and playing Hover this way helps your blue chickens win the game well short of 10 minutes (happens a lot when teamed with good Kumi pilots). I know there is a lot of talk about Hover isn't good for Champion. Maybe so, I play Expert, but get mixed with Master I/II/III and occasionally Champion players, and this formula above doesn't fail. When my Hover pops smoke (I ditch him if he lives too long as a starter and we have a strong beacon advantage), I next jump into Ancilot or Haechi and go to brawl, often center.

Now he could have been 1m out of range before and I or he moved into range on the next clip. I didnt look at the distance. this I will have to pay attention to. ie situational awareness.... .lol

If the target is beyond 800 m, the Molot Ts fire into no man's land also.
