Disclaimer: I got this idea from my experience of past few games I have played and from what I have heard from others on this forum . And I know there are many games out there that are completely F2P or P2W. But this theory is about those 60-70% games and devs of those games.
I think devs of a F2P game are trying to follow this life cycle for their games.
Their are four stages.
Stage 1: F2P
As the title suggest in this stage devs will invent a game and bring it to the market. Generally they will expect following things.
? State of the game: F2P
? Updates: Few updates where most new stuffs are well balanced
? Skill: Players with good skills will dominate the game
? Profit for devs: They do not expect very huge profit
? Player base: No. of players will increase gradually
Now devs will observe the response of players and profit from the game . IF the response and profit are good than they will try to enter the 2nd stage.
Stage 2: P2P
? State of the game: P2P
? Updates: Few updates where new stuffs will give you advantage over others but won't make you invincible
? Skill: Players with good skill and players who has paid for new stuffs will dominate the game
? Profit for devs: Devs will expect more profit than the first stage
? Player base: No. of players will be the highest in this stage
Now if response from players and profit are batter than devs will try to move on to the 3rd stage (This is where I think War Robots is right now).
Stage 3: P2W
? State of the game: P2W
? Updates: Many updates where most of the new stuffs are far batter than the old stuffs and can give you a very good advantage against others who have not paid for the latest stuffs
? Skill: Only the players who have paid for the new stuffs will dominate the game. Skill doesn't play a good part in this stage.
? Profit for devs: Devs will try to gather most profit before they start losing players
? Player base: No. of players will start declining. Only rich players will stay in the end.
Now devs can decide to end the life of a game here but if they choose they can go for the 4th stage.
Stage 4: New game development
If devs continues to get enough profit even after the 3rd stage than they will try to keep the old game alive by releasing few updates(may be lower than the third stage) and will try to invent a new game and bring it to the market.
I think War Robots is trying to enter into the 3rd stage.
