Trying out some stuff on slot#5 over the weekend I decided to try a Zenit Noricum Natasha and I was quite impressed with the results even with its relatively low weapon lvls. I could take out Trebs, Gekkos, Spydras and Zeus Furies at pretty much every map. I didn't use it every battle, I drop in the best starting bot for the particular map (usually Rog, Gareth or Zarny) and if there's a sniper or spydra that's gonna be a problem for us, I drop the Natty to deal with it/them. It was really effective.
But the response from blues was a surprise. At Yama an Orkan Fujin started trolling me, trying to push me off the ledge and firing at me. I'd already taken down one red firing Trebs and there was still another one firing away at every blue on their way into the fray. At Moon my Galahad and my Rog went down to a Spydra and artillery fire so took them on in the Natty too. Both tend to be still while they fire and only move after you take them on so I alternated fire from one to other, changing my range from the Natty between shots so he didn't too much damage with his return fire and got them both. In that match too, I had blue DB feed me a face full of fire - clearly feeling that I wasn't contributing.
I've gotten p'd at snipers too when the battle is happening at close quarters and we need numbers. At Canyon I was sending my third bot down to hold CB wondering why I was so out-numbered and there were four blues hanging at the spawn area with not much to fire at, so I get the "don't just camp" thing, but they have a place.
I think at the mid to upper leagues a pilot should be given the respect of being credited with making decent bot choices. He's sacrificed a slot to have that there and if it was useless he wouldn't use it. I often think of a battle I was in at SF quite a while ago. It was a brutal face to face fight on both sides of the valley. Every time I spawned there was the same blue Gekko Patton at the bridge using the buildings for cover. When I went passed him in my last bot and the battle was coming down to the wire I gave him some Orkan fire just to say, "What the heck? Get involved!" We won the battle by a hair and when I checked the damage table, he'd taken down 8 reds and was the highest damage scorer on the table... He probably won that game for us.
So when you've got time to troll another blue because he's not doing what you think he should do, maybe its because he's already taken out the Butch that would be smoking your @55 right then.

The Zenit Noricum Tashas don't exactly instill confidence in a team win...especially if three of them spawn at the same time at start. One thing I will say is know when to jettison your arty bot to help out with beacons or a maneuver if the team needs you. No point in sitting in a corner lobbing HE if the team is about to lose to beacon control.

That's the danger of playing an artillery bot - it probably won't get killed doing it's job. So you got to eject as soon as its done what you wanted it to do, or if its not able to do what you want it to do. I played it like this: it was the second bot I dropped, and only if there was a need for it, I do that and then eject 'cos I've still got 3 other bots that can do much more in the rest of the battle.

Artillery bots need babysitting . A pure artillary cannot defend itself from the silliest light bot .
It's a slow bleed weapon meant to flush out campers and soften up enemies for other bots to kill .

Its when they're left psh-pishing at the back for the whole game that they're dead-weight.
Also - they're killers. They do real damage... Those defenders at CB at SF? The Treb and Gekko snipers at the farm buildings? The Molots at Yama, Fury at Shenzen... CB defenders at Yama... They die. As to softening up, well not every confrontation is two fresh bots going head to head until one is dead. 75% of the battle is partial damage.

Knife fighters hate artillery yet whenever I go to kill them the bloody red knife fighters protect them. GRRRRR Had a red pumping out Mk 2 hydras and spirals 「illegitimate child」 killed 4 of my bots I would have killed him but a knife fighter intervened. I'd have let me kill the sod and then killed him.

Probably because arties are often near beacons, meaning they want to protect those beacons. Also to minimize damage. If you focus on arties they can sucker punch you and lose less health killing you.

(Yeah, snipers will take some damage, but not enough to kill them in a reasonable time.) The fact that @travlar claims that artillery is efficient on pretty much every map just says something about the state of the game. Of course, even unskilled pilots can do damage - one of my main problems with War Robots, the dominance of no-skill weapons. In those games an artillery bot helps. But in a game against a good team any artillery robot is a liability. And I build my hangar for those good games, not the games where defeat or victory comes down to whether it's 4vs2 or 2vs4 crappy randoms. Also note that the damage from Zenits is almost negligible (unless, again, the target is stationary). A Noricum Patton is much more efficient than a Zenit Nori Natty.

With the vast majority of games won by beacon control, War Robots is primarily a territory game. Arty setups cannot meaningfully challenge the territory. A pilot who elects to play artillery has only two chances of victory - a thoroughly synchronised group of teammates, or an enemy team of underlevelled players and morons. Considering the difficulty most of us experience to find either of these things with any regularity, this may explain the hate for artillery from your teammates.

In general, I can see where snipers, missile boats and artillery are useful.
Considering how hard bruisers and mid rangers work to get on the board,
its just hard to have a healthy respect for a player who can drink a mocha chai latte AND play at the same time.
I do however have to acknowledge the honorable few who fulfill a counter sniper/artillery role.

Hmm, I've been on the receiving end of many good artillery bombings. By good, I mean that it kept me from doing what I was supposed to do. Because most of my bots are mediums, I can't afford to baby sit a beacon, and the few seconds it takes to cap a beacon, or the many seconds it takes to steal it, I'm a sitting duck, and artillery can usually take a good chunk of my health. It's like chess, or a better example, Chinese chess. You know that piece? The cannon? The one that can only attack if there is another piece in between? And a classic move is to put two cannons in line so that they can both check the king? One of the best artillery setups I've faced is the Arty Natty in the back, with a sniper build beside, or a mid range zeus or RDB a little further up. This combination is murder on Yam, SF and Canyon.

I run artillery sometimes, despite the hate. Will do so even more, when i get it to lvl 10. And i do cap beacons with it, if no reds are near them (more on domination).
I think it's very effective in expert league, as enemies don't expect it that much, thus making it easy to strike them in packs. I also target more the one red with every clip, which makes their hiding from me useless and just wastes their time.
Knife fighters should take the advantage of an artillery bot in their team (or sniper), going forward the path that's covered, hunt injured bots etc., but most times i don't see them thinking of it at all. All they do is shoot and die, repeat... no strategy, no knowledge of other teammates whereabouts etc. Going even 1v1 with a maxed bot is waste of hp, i think.
Good artillery is far better than a maxed knife fighter that has only damage dealing in mind.
There was a blue pilot one game, who disliked my tempest/2xnoricums/molot Leo. First he raged out on me with his orkan fujin, the went to shoot reds and died. Did the same with two ancilots, a carnage and griffin. He lost the all in the first 5 minutes, while i captured 2 beacons with my Leo, killed some 3 reds and injured a lot of others. My score was better than his, despite his "superior" weapons.
But, as i get bad attitude from blues a lot more lately, i'm thinking of ditching those games at all, when someone from my team shoots at me - I can have bad mood, too, you know, so truck you, don't get on my nerves next time, when we team up, if you want to win. Yes, i'll lose some points, but i'll regain them back fast in a game where blue pilots know, how to use teams bots to their advantage.
Also, I'm the kind of player who usually drinks my latte/tea/beer/whatever, smokes a cigarette and plays at the same time, helps me stop for a second, look around the battlefield, timer, bots in battle, beacon bar, and think through my next move. Don't want to promote drinking and smoking, but a lot of players lack the ability to understand, whats happening in the battle, and only seem to think of damage.

Most of us have access to a nice blue umbrella for that rain . Fujin is very nice for that sort quibble . A sniper gives less warning and more damage .

It really depends on the league. In IOS Champ its like most other campers-in effective (this does not include MK2 trebs/Zeus/MK2 Gekko). Ive seen it used somewhat effectively in conjunction with a highly aggressive clan squad, but its really more of a novelty. Most of the bots in my league have an ancile. There are many more load outs that effectively take down ancile and deter the advance of reds. A seasoned player does not plan a hanger around long maps, rather knows how to navigate a long map with brawler bots to avoid getting wiped out by campers-meaning, you don't use snipers to counter snipers. Why? Because short maps a camper is such a detriment to a team. That will change with alternate hangers, but long maps still need beacons captured. I am constantly amazed with players that assume no responsibility in winning a match-camp camp camp. Ive had matches where I just give up on capping for the team - I let the red team take them and advance on the line of 5 campers on my team to allow those juicy camping bots to become bags of silver for the reds. I had one this morning-Why play this game if you do not intend on winning the map you planned your hanger around (it was on Canyon-5 campers that did pitiful damage and capped 0 beacons)

Sorry, but I've had too many experiences with campers in Diamond/Expert to agree with you. Too many that stay in their support bot to the bitter end as the rest of our team is decimated and we lose beacon after beacon, even though they have 4 other bots in their hangar that would have helped more than their arty or sniper. Yes, a good arty or sniper can be an asset when employed skillfully and appropriately. Unfortunately, in my experience, truly good arty or snipers are few and far between. Of course, the same thing can be said about knifers - the overall proportion of players who are mediocre to just bad, even in Diamond, is mind-boggling sometimes.

I mentioned it a few times before and gladly do it again.. I had a lot of fun when trying out the double zenith raijin. and the noricum patton. amazing how many kills you can get if you lead your shots or anticipate the moves. and the blue rage. full load of a DB griffin in my face from a "friendly" jumping griffin - he got killed by a treb butch while jumping. funny scene secondly I had a lot of fun with a "troll fit" golem with zenith, hydra and spiral. it was just a tryout setup. but man i capped beacons, got some kills and most of all i had fun again! no blues shot or did mind my golem with that "inneffective" setup. and the funny thing is. neither did the reds! they took a quick look at me then minded their own buisness and headed the other direction. a m a z i n g ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) and i played in champions to expert and back to back.

As far as getting really pummeled by artillery, it has happened to me a few times but more often than not it is just a minor annoyance. But like Possum said, if you have too many blues standing in spawn blasting away, your team is very likely to loose.

I've seen artillery played effectively by one (1) pilot in a few (2-3) games. Memorable part was clearing ramp+center when reds held center beacon on Yamantau. Still, a complete waste of a slot in almost all matches on close range maps. 99.99% of artillery players have no idea what they're doing, don't help the team and pretty much guarantee a loss. Which is why they get the hate.

Here are my thoughts... If blue is ahead drop any bot you want. If we are behind on beacons or the beacon bar, drop something that can cap a beacon and go get at least 1. If blue is behind and you drop a bot that is going to cost blue the game, I give up right there. I can't just leave without risking being placed in the LPQ. So I'll occupy my time by pushing them over an edge, shooting them, blocking their shoots, whatever I can to make them as miserable as they are making me.
The point of the game is to capture beacons to win the game. Not to sit in the back throwing popcorn watching your team lose.

I think when the second hangar becomes a reality, people will start to appreciate the variety of play that we still have in this game. Yam, SF and Canyon are all places where an artillery bot can make a difference in the game. Hard to concentrate on knife fighting when your screen keeps shaking and noris keep chipping away at your HP. Heck, I've even seen artillery used effectively on smaller maps like Moon and Valley and PP. Still, I do agree. 1 artillery bot is good. 2 is better. 3 is a crowd.

I think at the mid to upper leagues a pilot should be given the respect of being credited with making decent bot choices. Nope. Plenty of pilots make it quite a ways just by playing a lot. The reality is the higher level you get the further away from artillery you get. If someone drops artillery at Diamond+ they are not making a meaningful contribution to the team. They do not do enough to sway the balance of the game. Please don't confuse using artillery with a sniping Gekko Patton. The two are not comparable and attempting to conflate the two, because of effective range doesn't make for a valid argument. Try to find an example of artillery making a comparable impact. Once in a blue dog moon, maybe, but the super majority of the time artillery folk are simply ignored until they can be cleaned up for silver.

I think artillery is very niche. Being in the right map isn't enough. Not only does the pilot need to be skilled enough to identify in what situations to spawn an arty, but those situations have to arise in the first place, AND have to coincide with you preparing to spawn.
You never spawn an arty as your first bot, because that would be insane. Spawning it as your last bot is hardly a choice, you're just stuck with it. So that leaves you with 3 chances to actually spawn one with the intent to take advantage of the situation. And you would have to jettison it once you are done with it. It sounds like playing a 4-slot hanger for the most part.
I'd take a mid-ranger if I want to shoot further.

This is exactly right. Worse still, the persons who face the brunt of the downside are those trying to fight for territory at a disadvantage. That means that the camping player may not even realize how much they're harming the team until it is too late.

The most effective use of artillery I've seen was in Team Death Match. This was, of course, because there was no impetus to push for beacons. Since this is gone, the build seems to not be near as useful in every battle. I can see a use in certain situations, but I prefer my hangers to have bots that are versatile enough to do significant damage on any/every map and within the current meta. I carry no long range bots and only one mid ranger (Zeus Fury).
I will say that, if a pilot decides to use an artillery bot, the idea of using one first is not smart. That's why I'm glad the OP mentioned using it 2nd or 3rd. Depending on the game mode, your first bot should be able to participate significantly in the capture of the home beacons (first) and then the capture and holding of the highly contested center beacon (or strategic beacons if you're playing on the Moon map). Only when you have control over the CB is removing snipers a priority (or some would say a luxury). Getting a beacon bar lead is critical in allowing flexibility in mid/late game decisions. For Domination, I usually drop my Ancilot, but for BR (when I play it, which is rare) I usually drop my Rhino or Haechi. If you're going to run an arty bot, I do get frustrated when I see it first. How do you know it will be effective if you don't really know your targets yet?

It's terrible. Firetrucking terrible. The marshmallows are stupid easy to avoid, and the pilots are dead weight.
Pilot a bot with use.
