Not sure how much has gotten around, but the northeast US just got whacked with a sudden nasty violent rain and wind storm Sunday night/Monday morning. About 1/3 of Rhode Island lost power -- mine went out around 11:00 PM. No problem, I thought, we got a generator about 5 years ago and wired the house to cut over the essentials (well pump, furnace, fridge, a few lights). Rolled the generator put of the garage his morning, started right up then petered out after a few seconds. Then would not start. 8000 watt power supply dead in the water because I let it sit too long without running it. Now I'm screwed.
Headed to the 24-hour Walmart at about 6:00 AM, no generators in stock. Looked next door, and the Home Depot looked open. Said what the hell, can't hurt to try. If I could just find something in the 5000 watt range, I'm grabbing it, though firmly believing there wouldn't be such a thing to be found in the area now for months. And there it was, next to two 8500-watt monsters, one single 5500-watt Ryobi. Got some help loading it in the back of my Mazda 3 hatchback, where it miraculously fit with room to spare, took it home, did the quick assembly of wheels and feet, added oil, fired it up, we're good to go as long as there are open gas stations.
I didn't realize until I saw the scope of the damage in the area how lucky we were to find that in only the second place we looked, not to mention not taking any property damage considering it looks like a bomb went off everywhere around us. We're still in the dark, it could be days before power is restored, and there are still almost 140,000 customers in the state without power. It's a bit of a pain in the backside planning life around the generator on time, but damn, it sure could be a WHOLE lot worse.

Thanks for all the well wishes, they're much appreciated; but we're in good shape. Juice came back around 4:00 am this morning. But there are a lot of people still in the dark, and many who got some pretty heavy tree damage. Like I said, we got lucky. But thank you very much!
