I've been losing interest in this game over the last 6 months ands it's due to the surge of Trident Furies on battlefield.
I play 5 Power Runners (sometimes I play 1 RDB Griffin) and I've seen this trend by Pixonic to nerf knifers to the benefit of pilots that prefer mid-long range fighting.
I think it began mid last year with the nerf to the Mag/Taran's aim, got compounded the the Piñata/Orkan's nerf, and now the with Aphids being nerfed (something I was completely against), you basically have no margin of error to assualt a Trident Fury a knifer without getting crippled at a minimum. PS - I kill Furies and quad Aphid Patton nearly every game, so it's not a matter of I can't adjust --- it's just that the knifer weapons I need to do the job have been steadily nerfed to the point where a Fury assault becomes a risky 1 for 1 exchange at best (who likes that?).
The new Proto Trebs should help provide suppressive fire to keep Trident Furies under cover, but remains to be seen. However, even if the Proto Trebs do that, it will just out more mid/long range setups on the map.
If you've read my posts on this topic before, you know I feel that the ascension of mid-long range is bad for the game and I believe it will ultimately kill it (cause then this game becomes just another tank game - a bad one too).
Anyhow, read Phoenix's rant in has video comment on YouTube and the comments other pilots have left. My play on War Robots has plummeted for the same reasons - the game has gotten boring. If the game was more technical or had more content, I could put up with this, but as far as a simplistic combat game, the play is really bland.
Please feel free to comment on this, but save the "just adjust" comments for noobs - I'll adjust, but quitting won't be far off and I certainly don't see reasons for me to spend.

I'm writing this from observation only. I've been playing at what I guess used to be (new MM specifics TBD) High Silver with 6/8 heavies, and have yet to run into the Trident Fury menace at full force.
That said, in the recent videos from other folks I've seen that play above my level, I would agree with him. There is always at least one Trident on the map, usually on a Fury. I have my own thoughts on how games should be balanced, but I feel that if something is so prevalent that it's almost mandatory for top tier play (Trident Fury, Aphids, etc...), then it's probably above the intended power curve of the game. There are 24 different bot types with 25 different weapon types, so the degree of hangar uniformity shouldn't be nearly as drastic as it seems to be.
Edit: Heck, around the 4 minute mark of that video, there seem to be at least 4 Trident Furies on the map (two per side)... That's 1/3 of the players in a match running the same configuration at the same time. That would be a bit concerning to me as a developer were I in charge of making a system where diversity is as desired as balance.

From what I heard (Clanmates who were on test server) the aphid nerf wont affect their usefullness against Furys. On the contrary I have the feeling that the rise of midrange is heavily due to the aphid buff - which is essentially NOT a knifers weapon (how can a non-LOS mortar like rocket circle be considered a knifers weapons). People turn to midrange rockets and splash because the alternative is trying to rush through something that resembles WW1 trench warfare (and if aphids are coming from 2 directions shielding is hopeless). I feel a bit the same like you - these mid-longrange fights (including more hydras I think) are getting old pretty quick. Nothing compared to the thrill of battling over beacons with my good ol Boas. Plus it looks like the new MM may keep me from sporting a medium hangar every now and then (and no, I dont want to loose 20 games just to be able to roll a few with mediums in an environment where they belong). We'll see. For now I just wont spend on the game and see how things work out. P.S: 2 Lancelots are a burden on Yama... why not get a Kwk Fury and hunt those TriFurys?

I have a contrary view on Aphids. Aphids were already nerfed weeks ago and even the heavies could go 40KPH or better could slip them. Aphids stopped being an issue to me - and I use 5 knifers at that time. I brought my Griffins back out and retire a Carnage and a Rhino (PS - Rhinos slip Aphids on Assault mode). This is why I didn't want the proposed Aphid nerf ---- as it simply wasn't necessary and the weapon wasn't that OP anymore. I use 2 OrkAphid Griffins in top tier and I have no problem closing with Quad Aphid Patton. So to me, the Aphid is a knifer weapon as I use it in very close quarter. If bot like Tashas and Furies can dodge Aphids by simply moving, then that would be a the loss of a great weapon to deal with the main problem of this game right now - the Trident Fury.

I've been seeing this in the YouTube videos I watch, while knifer bots are necessary to cap, it's mostly the trident furies doing the bulk of the damage. Most of the games seem to be decided by who has more trident furies and use them better to mech players out. In my trash gold games, a good trident fury will usually be top damage.

@tas: try Aphids after the update. The arc seems abit more flat than before and very fast bots can dodge them a bit better.
Imho now they can be called a knifers weapon.

OFC you think aphids are fine, you have *8* of them. If you thought they were fine, you should try playing against them with zero. Then maybe you'd think they need fixing.
I can counter a Trident Fury because he has to expose himself to shoot. An aphid user never has to expose himself and an aphid patton does more damage per volley than a trident fury. Dodging them is easy? Maybe one. Try dodging 2 aphid users. Near impossible. And Galahad does not dodge all the aphids. Visually, it may look like it, but you still take some damage, so some of the rockets are still hitting.
Separate from the damage, aphids also bring this distorded play where guys are so busy dodging and getting their jollies throwing aphids that nobody is paying attention to beacons.
And people complains how everyone has gone mid range. Then my buddy tells me to use RDB to kill Aphid Pattons on DC. Gee, I wonder why everyone has gone mid range?

It started with too powerful knife fighters, and the release of the trident. That is where it all began.
