Alright, here's the deal. Like so many other newbies to the game I have finally reached the 20lvl mark. And finally found the Walking War Robots website and started reading up on bots and configurations, only to find out that I've been going about the game wrong all along. I found myself with a couple of bots I felt had good set ups. I started using a Vityaz and a G.I. Patton. the Vityaz is my tank/knife fighter. I found myself going toe to toe with about any bot in the battle tier and could really do some damage. The Patton I would use long range, and was my second favorite bot in my hanger, Vityaz being my first. So, i started reading the website and decided my next bot should be the Griffin. After upgrading to it and going to battle, it put me in the next tier. Not knowing how to configure this bot to my style, and it being the only bot in my hangar that was at this level. I found myself lasting 5 min in a battle with all four of my bots. My Vityaz is no match at all for the battles with heavy bots. So, I'd love some advice on what configurations and what bots i should be looking out for. I'm finding that I love using the fast bots to run around and capture, but REALLY enjoy knife fights. I'm posting my hangars, one that shows the Griffin, which I have placed to the side to upgrade weapons before trying to use it again. Go easy on me, I have literally only played this game for about a week. I spent a total of about 3 hrs playing it while off work sick a couple of days ago. Which is when i found the set up for my Vityaz. So, go easy on me, as i just figured out yesterday that I've been going about this all wrong.

You should stick with mediums (and a light or two) until you get them leveled up to around 4/6-4/8 (level 4 bots, level 6-8 weapons). Once your mediums are at that level, you MAY be able to use your Griffin again with mid-level weapons (lvl 4-5) without too much impact on your tier. A lot of people level up their heavies to 6/8 in the background before switching from a mostly mediums hangar to mostly heavies. Some more good advice in this recent thread: war-robots-forum.freeforums.net/thread/1234/stock-post-holiday-escape-bronze

And remember to keep your weps leveled ahead of your bots and leveling them across your hanger....having a higher level bot with lower lvl weps or just one much higher level bot/wep combo will just get you killed faster in a match.

Pretty new here too but a few bits of advice that helped me early on. Looking at your hangar...
1. Take note of maximum distance for weapons and match weapons accordingly.
Example: Your Patton is sporting a Noricum and ECU shield. I say scrap them both - unless you really use the shield, you are just losing firepower which translates into lost damage. The Noricum has range but zero accuracy - sell it. Keep the Gekko and add three molots. Your new set up will be decent midrange bot. Move you punisher to your Vityaz now you have a better Knife fighter close range. Buy three piñatas for your gep and you will be in business for a hit and run close range bot.
2. As was stated before - stop leveling your bots until your weapons are two levels higher (at least). 3. Don't spend any gold until you buy your 5th slot! It will give you more versatility on the battle field.

Fredrick I took your advice with the Patton, and switched all my Pinata back to my gep. I mainly use my gep for capturing. At this point, is it worth switching out my cossack for another medium bot? and if so, which one? i have 1.7 in silver to purchase another medium bot

Wow! Your hanger already looks better!
Boa all the way! It is the best tank bot and will serve you well through the higher tiers. It is slow and takes some patience getting used to but it will be worth it.
My advice: Use your first Workshop points (WSP) for a Taran for your Boa. I'd also swap your lvl 6 Thunder to your boa and buy another for your Vityaz if you are going to make that a knife fighter as well. The Thunder Taran boa is one of the best knife fighters in the lower and mid tiers.

I'd set the Griffin aside for now, don't sell it, its time will come. Being in the heavy category is what is pushing you into more fierce battles. Matchmaker, or MM ranks you by your single strongest bot. It also uses your average damage and win% as sliders in choosing your opponents. Better damage/wins, tougher competition. How much so is uncertain, but it is there. Check the matchmaker thread (it is a bit daunting at first) for more info.
Keep your bot levels at 4, weapons 6 for mediums (boa, patton, golem, vityaz) and 8 for lights (cossack, schutze, destrier, gepard). That's the ceiling for your current tier, stick around a little while you experiment with different setups and find your groove before levelling beyond (and eventually bringing your griffin back).
Also, its commonly considered inefficient to mix range types and functions on each bot. "Ready for anything" doesn't always pan out when applied to individual bot, but does when applied to your entire hangar. Each bot could serve certain (vague) roles, each with their respective strengths and weaknesses.
Bots like the Patton and Gepard really shine when multiple matching weapons are mounted. Quad or triple anything light weapons work a treat. Yes some cases of mixed types or ranges can work, but they're very niche.
When it comes to mixed hardpoints like the Golem, Boa and Vityaz take care in choosing weapons that compliment each other. Prime example (at your tier) is the Thunder/Punisher (closer you get, harder they fall) CRV/Tulumbas (same rockets, same range).
You said you like 'knife fighting' so shortrange weapons are the way to go, choose those with 350m or less range. Keep in mind although Thunders, Punishers, and Molots to a lesser extent lose accuracy farther out, so keep under 300m to do any worthwhile damage (600m for Molots I believe). "Knife Fighter" weapons also include Pinatas, Orkans, Magnums, Tarans and Aphids.
Further along the slider you have "Midrange Support", slightly less damage, greater range (up to 600m, 800 if you include Molots). CRVs, Tulumbas, Spirals, Hydras, Zeus and Tridents. Great weapons keeping opponents at range, not as good up close.
Next up is "Long Range" or "Sniper" where your Gekko fits in, alongside KWKs, Trebuchets, Kang Daes. Good for territory control, bad up close.
Lastly is "Artillery". The loathed and abhorred Noricum and Zenits. Commonly seen on on Natashas. VERY rarely are they used well. I politely advise against them unless you are dead set on embarking on a perilous journey of enlightenement up a strangely named mountain in order to find the five players who actually know how to make these weapons (and Natashas) more useful than throwing popcorn at your enemy. There is a fabled Grandmaster of Noricum Karate who will only teach the most dedicated.
Hopefully this helps swing you in the right direction.
p.s. Noricum Karate is the act of running any matching hardpoint bot (Destrier, Gepard, Patton) with nothing but Noricums and running under a larger bot to fire at point blank range. Also known as the Noricum Uppercut.

Fredrick and 《₩hirl》 thanks so much for the info. I went ahead and did a couple of quick battles while at work just to check the Patton's new set up. MUCH better!! I think i'll take the advice and grab a boa. Its not the first time I've seen this advice. Thanks once again for all the info. and Trogon z for the link.

You'll like that boa even more once you put a taran or orkan on it.
