Anyone doing anything special to see the eclipse coming up? Travel, take off work etc etc. I'll probably take that day off and let my son stay home from school. Just because it doesn't happen that often. Will be his first one.
I'd like to take some photos of it being photography is a hobby of mime. But wow some of those filters are about $150 on the cheaper end. Not sure I want to sink that into a picture. Plus the weather might be bad for pics. Like clouds etc etc.

Here in Europe we traditionally run through the streets ringing a bell screaming about the end of the world as we know it. Well I do, it's not so much a wide spread reaction now. People appear calmer since 'science' figured it out, that and wide spread use of marijuana. Its just not the hallmark of the impending apocalypse that it used to be.

Doesn't seem like its visible in the Southern hemisphere...
Awesome GIF on Wikipedia showing how it pass. Note the tiny black spot where the Sun will be totally obscured - that's be something to see!

This is the first total solar eclipse in the continental US in a long time. I will be driving to visit family who live in the totality band. Should be clear skies.... The totality band passes from Oregon to South Carolina. The further east you are, the longer the eclipse will last. eclipse2017.nasa.gov/www.greatamericaneclipse.com/-Amid

What's the optimal time of day they are saying? I'll be in Seattle during the day it hits.

What's the optimal time of day they are saying? I'll be in Seattle during the day it hits. Totality will hit Salem, OR at 10:18am PDT. Should be similar in WA, but you won't get too much of the experience. I've seen numerous partial eclipses, and there isn't much to them. -Amid

Finally, an eclipse during a night time. I might watch it, at least won't be as hot as during the day (it's about 34 Celsius here, or 94 F) On the other note, I'm sorry, I just MUST post it

Like clouds etc etc. No need to go fancy - a simple overexposed and developed film from analogue camera will do just fine (e.g. end pieces of it). Works as long as your lens is not too big in diameter. In case it is, some DIY with unused filter can do the job; it's enough to have the center of the filter treated with high-ev blocker, rest could be totally blackened. Other option is el-cheapo glasses you can get for eclipse observation (added sometimes to magazines / newspapers when such event is imminent). I used that with good results on a simple point & shoot (yeah, all the fancy gear was not there lol). After that it's a matter of proper focusing. Have a camera that allows MF or at least focus on the far object (without filter), block the focusing, apply/hold the filter, point it where it shines and click Other neat/super easy way to enjoy the eclipse is using the pinhole projection.

I believe that camera film, as well as floppy disk film are of a rare commodity nowadays. On the other hand, you can always watch it with a help of a smartphone camera.

I'm gonna get some great pics too and will post. I'm just north of Atl. Going to drive about an hour north near TN. border for 100% obscurity. I'll be going with my brother and my GF who are both professional photographers.
I don't even miss meteor showers, conjunctions and transits usually so you bet your ?bum-bum? I'm not missing this!
It will be cool to watch it and think about how, many, many years ago the wise men and shamans of many cultures stood before and watched the same thing happen.
This is how some groups and people came to power. Some wise men had the timing all figured out and knew when the eclipse would arrive. They would tell others in the villages and tribes that a snake was going to come and swallow the sun. This is where the Ourobouros comes from.
When the sun was blocked by the moon and only the corona remained, the villagers could see the serpent wrapped around the sun, eating it up. The wise men would then say "bow to me and turn over your power and will and lives to me and I will banish the serpent". The villagers would fall to thier knees and beg for them to make it stop. And on cue, the sun would begin to re-appear and become whole again.

Probably some time-traveling Yankee from Connecticut used that to his advantage in King Arthur's court.

Can't wait! So close!.
Too bad I have to get up in about 4 hours.
We're going to leave Atlanta about 5am(est) and drive about 3 hours NW to Fall Creek Falls State Park in TN. At least that's the plan. Never been there but it looks like a nice park, not too far and in the path of totality.
I should be asleep right now instead of on here posting this but I'm too over-excited...

That was WICKED cool!
Totally worth the 3 hour drive to Sparta, Tennessee.'
It was sooooo cool to see it go from light twilight to pitch darkness with lit streetlights and bugs chirping in about 60 seconds. And then totality lasted almost 3 minutes where we were.
Got a few excellent photos with expensive gear. I will post them later tonight or maybe even tomorrow.. I'm running on 2 hours of sleep in the past 36.

Got together with my wife's coworkers for the eclipse. Haven't seen anything like that since the early 90s, and it was a partial then. Live in Clarksville, TN, so had 2 minutes+ of full eclipse. Played Pink Floyd, Eclipse during totality. The way the light faded and temperature dropped was eerie.
Very cool, once in a lifetime event.

Was clear skies near my family's property in Idaho. The corona was the most impressive part. But minutes before totality the temperature was already dropping.
It's somewhat like a sunset with light from outside the umbra coming from the northern and southern skies. Could only see a few stars.

I looked out my window at it with my sweet cardboard glasses. At the max-eclipse moment, I went outside and saw it. Nothing special here.
It's kinda odd. I work for NASA, but just don't get all that excited by a lot of that stuff. It's more than just a job to me, but I don't get all geeked out by all the space stuff.
