I've been doing a lot of thinking about this recently thanks to a thread on the old forum. We all agree that the Ancile is practically useless and definitely a waste of gold. The Fujin's and Carnage shield face similar challenges. What we should have for balance is something that increases the survivability of the bot without making it overpowered. Reasonably it should be somewhat effective against many things, and very effective or not at all effective to few things.
The way I see it the Ancile has a few main weaknesses.
1: It takes far too much damage from Thunders. At ranges of up to 500m any Ancile is toast in seconds. The area it protects is gargantuan! Hiding on the far side of a building your Ancile will often be vulnerable on the far side, or stick up past the building a good ways. This can be fixed by reducing the protected area. Reducing the Ancile to 70% of it's current radius reduces it's surface area by about 50%. Flattening it would significantly reduce it's surface area as well. A thunder up close would still shred the shield, but it should.
2: Unlike weapons, the Ancile is only good for one encounter because the regen is so slow it will see max HP once. We need a balanced regen without making it overpowered. So we boost the regen. But wait, that makes certain setups useless! Your DB or RDB stop being able to overcome the regen of the shield! So you reduce the HP, but how much? For a good throw around number lets go with the damage of two aphids. One large seems to be about equal to two small hardpoints, they're both gold equipment, and with two Aphids the same overall cost. That gives us 34,608hp regenerating in 11 seconds at 3146hp a second. Raise the reactivation to 20% and you get a free shot with an empty thunder before it goes back up.
A pinata does 22,832 burst damage, so it would shave off about 1.5 pinatas, and regenerate to full before they could get off a second burst. Strong but not overpowering. Pins only do 10,244, so it's equal to three and a third Pins. Two would negate a Trident Fury, so that's too strong, but what about our first change? Splash! With a small enough protected sphere they would not be able to disable the shield, but would be able to damage the bot underneath. What about plasma? We can't reasonably give up a heavy slot with everyone and their brother having plasma, so lets make 350m plasma weapons do double damage to the shield. Long and mid range plasma weapons would still go right through.
The Fujin shield is fine as is. Reduce the area, nothing more.
The Carnage should be shieldless. As is it's a liability at worst and useless at best. Upgrade it and it would supplant the Fury.
