Cheap and easy? Kind of depends what that means. The OP seems to have stuck to Ag only bots. I would probably consider builds that use a modest amount of WSP as still in the cheap and easy range since it's just silver and a bit of time.
These are suggestions for early inexpensive bots that pack a punch (think private/bronze tier), either all silver or 7500 wsp or less.
Boa: thunder and Taran (punisher as a stopgap) Leo: thunder and piñatas or punishers (upgrade to magnums later) Natasha: thunders and piñatas or magnums (yeah, it's too fragile at higher tiers but early on it melts face) Griffin: RDB, pinata/punishers, pinata/tulumbas (placeholder for future orkans) Golem: trident/pin/tulumbas Vityaz: thunder and pinatas/magnums
Obviously the heavies will age better than the mediums will but I think the bang for the buck of the boa (and even the other silver mediums) is hard to beat for a starting player.

Leo with a thunder and piñata is a fairly tanky bot.

I prefer the griffins loadout to the Leos. Can't put Tarans on a Leo.

In my hangar (presently) I have a Leo/Trident/Pins -- Leo/Thunder/Pinatas -- Lancelot/Ancile/Tarans -- Griffin/Tulumbas/Pins -- Patton/Aphids I have a Rhino in the garage because I never enjoyed using him.
Overall, the Leo/Thunder/Pinatas is probably my favorite bot. I cannot tell you how many times I have faced rhinos head on and won. The hardest thing to learn with the bot is to be patient and work your way in close and face them one at a time. Dont charge into two or three bots at the same time. Every time my first bot dies and I drop in the Leo, I think of it as Letting Loose the Beast.

I consider my hangar of two Golems, Leo and a Gareth to be somewhat inexpensive.
Having tried the Thunder Pinata Leo build I was unhappy with 1. The centre aligned heavy slot requiring the Leo to expose most of the torso to fire. This meant that despite the high HP the Leo would last less time on the field than even my Gareth, and 2. The slow speed of the Leo meant any shoot and take cover strategy with centre shooting difficult and particularly vulnerable to hydras and aphids.
So now I run my Leo with an ancile (pothead Leo), with Aphids, Pinata and Magnum. Greater longevity and decent shooting from cover.
The Gareth with Taran, Magnum, despite being a gold robot, is still a great deal overall imo.
The two Golems are cheap robots but with heavy medium light slots they have great firepower. They also upgrade in the shortest time compared to others. With short height and an extra wide medium hardpoint they are great for shooting from cover.
I run one with Thunder, Pinata, Taran. I mostly use the Taran and find its ability to do lots of work on the reds very addictive. The Thunder Pinata are great insurance when unexpectedly flanked. The second Golem I am building into a sniper using Nashorn, Molot MK2, Spiral. I don't know how effective it will be though. Sadly both Golems, unless an Ecu is used, can be quite susceptible to rockets, but in most conditions they seem to do alright.

Griffins are cheap and awesome, but not easy.
Thunder/Mag Leo relatively cheap and easy, Thunder/Pinata Leo even cheaper but a little trickier. Thunder/Taran Boa at lower levels both cheap and easy.
Oh, and I hear Rachael will sleep with you if you run the Voight-Kampff test on her. That's cheap and easy. Nexus-6 pretty strong, too.

Becaus the Griffin has to level up 4 weapons and the best stuff for it are gold and wsp, I say Boa is the cheapest strong bot.
