As a relative noob to War Robots I need to know what is the best route to go on upgrades. I wish I had this info earlier as I have learned every upgrade is precious and very time consuming. I will consider any advice going forward.

Sad fact is you were lied to my good man. This game is actually WAR WEAPONS , your bots are just legs for your weapons.
If you want climb the leagues at a steady pace you level both guns and bots at the same time . If you are in a hurry to get paid for league promotion , pump weapons only.

Depends how high you want to go. If you get your bots to L9, it gives you max speed. Rule of thumb, your weps should be 2 levels higher that the bot.
I'm levelling to 9 and staying there for now

I suggest you to take a look at frunobulax guide hereI personally take a look at weapon level, 'cause not all weapons scale exactly 10% each level, therefore some level are a bit more efficient than others. Bots made to be fast, shielded, anciled and with rush speed benefit from upgrades more than other bots that lack these features. Bots that operates from long range rely more on weapon upgrades and less on bot upgrades, compared to bots that fight from close quarters. So I don't think there's a strict rule and usually upgrade accordingly to what I think it's best, case by case. Anyway try to keep your hangar well balanced.

Remember that both Golem and Natasha are cheaper to upgrade than other bots. Especially Golem, and the upgrade timers are much shorter. The Golem offers good firepower and teaches you corner shooting. The HP rise is percent-based, so a Leo gains more health per level than other bots. Shielded bots gain both health and shield strength (physical and energy shields).
Personally I think the old rule regarding bots and weapons levels still applies - upgrade your bots to level 6, your weapons to 8, then bots to 8. Burst/high damage weapons first (like Orkans or Thunders).

You know, you _could_ take the sabermetric approach to think about what gives you the most efficiency in battle. This takes a bit more thinking than blaring "weapons first", but it might get you better results.
There are builds designed to take damage (tanks and snipers), so HP is crucial. Given that the price to upgrade a robot is in line with the upgrade of 1 heavy weapon or 2 light weapons, would you rather have 8% more HP for X hours and Y millions, or 10% more weapon power by upgrading 4 weapons for 4*X hours or 4*x millions, in case of a Butch? Or, in case of the Raijin, 6% more HP and 6% more shield for one robot upgrade or 10% more damage for twice the amount?
And then, some robots are cheaper to upgrade. Getting a Natty from level 6 to level 12 (+59% HP) takes 7 days and approximately the same silver as getting one Thunder from level 11 to 12 (5 days). Weapons first? This advice comes from the old days where it influenced the matchmaking.

Shots before bots.
I kept my weapons 2 levels above my bots until my bots got to l9(max speed) then took weapons to 12 before bringing the bot up to 12.
Then I'll mk2 l12 all my weapons before doing the same with bots.
The rationale is that without damage you are doomed, at too tier play engagements are VERY short and the best defense is to put them down quick.

I go bots first, but only 1 level ahead. If the bot lasts 6-8% longer, it does more damage for all of its weapons. I can't count the number of times my DB Griffin has been under 2k health and still smoked or crippled a red bot. If it had been 1 level less...
Order:bots with benefits first (shield/Ancile) then speed bots (up to 9) then burst bots (DB Griffin and company) then anything else.
Weapons: burst first.

Order:bots with benefits first (shield/Ancile) then speed bots (up to 9) then burst bots (DB Griffin and company) then anything else. Weapons: burst first. That's one way to look at it. The other is if the weapons do more damage, your bot takes less damage. My rule is, I upgrade weapons first unless I plan on keeping the bot long term. I kept my Leo/Natashas at level 6 while I was leveling up my Griffins because I was lurking on these boards picking up on what builds/bots were viable in upper levels and knew that Griffins/Carnages were still very strong bots at upper levels.
